PHUKET: A Chinese man died at Patong Hospital yesterday (April 27) from injuries he sustained after allegedly falling from his fifth floor room of a hotel in Karon.

At 7am yesterday, Karon police received a call from Patong Hospital stating that a Chinese man who had fallen from a hotel in Karon had died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Police have stated that the man, whose name has been withheld until his family has been notify, had been drinking with friends on the beach until 11pm on Sunday (April 26).

He left the beach with his wife and they returned to their fifth floor room at around 1am on Monday.

At 3am a hotel security guard found the man on the ground covered in blood.

Police believe that the man fell from the building but will investigate further to find out the true cause of death.

RIP, just displays how unsafe/low Thai balcony railings can be. Interesting that it's not only a farang problem - drunk and falling off balcones.

Agreed about the balcony heights, lots are very low and designed for "Thai" sizes.

Question tho ... are "Chinese" now not considered farang/foreigners?

Farangs are considered Westerners. Chinese are Asian. We are all foreigners ...

Exessive alcohol, balconys, and people dont mix. Excessive alcohol, drunken exhuberance, bravado and play, coupled with balconys anywhere above ground level dont mix. Excessive alcohol, fun and frivolity on a balcony can be a deadly mix. There doesnt always have to be a dark story to tell, nor a crime committed, nor a suicide evident. Some of the drunkest skylarking fun imbibed people have fallen from great heights to their demise. Its not really all that unusual. Even if your wife is in the same room, at the same time, on the same floor, in the same state of anebriation. Its just that the male of the species, when full of alcohol, can make some really bad decisions, in the name of fun, love, laughter and romance, and even by perching ourselves in precarious positions on balconys, because it could never happen to us.....when we are drunk.....

The security guard finds him splattered on the ground at 3am. The police are notified at 7am - by the hospital. It begs the question, why weren't the police advised at 3am by the security guard. Or, would the hospital have notified the police if he had not died?.

All seems a bit odd.

Chinese have never been considered as farang. You just have to look at the history of the word, being derived from the word for the French merchants and mercenaries in the 1700's. This is not a history lesson, I wont give details.

The Thai have other names for the Chinese and Thai Chinese, Indians and Japanese etc. Some acceptable and some not so acceptable in conversation.

Smoking inside the room prohibited or discouraged, more people might tend to step outside on the balcony, cigarette in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other one. The balcony is not a place for partying, and even in places like hospitals the railings are often too low.

He wasn't " splattered on the ground" at 3am, he was discovered injured and taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The hospital notified the police later when he died as they are obliged to do when a death occurs in circumstances such as this.

Nothing seems odd at all.

OK. I accept he was discovered injured and not 'splattered'. But that does not answered my point. Had he not died then the police would have no interest as to the circumstances surrounding his fall, as the hospital would not have been required to report the incident. Neither was the security guard.

That is what I find 'odd'. There could have been a myriad of reasons why he ended up on the floor. Accident, foul play or lack of health and safety by the owners of the condo building.
