Third quake in 20-hour period rattles Phuket

PHUKET: -- A 4.5 magnitude tremor shook the island at the 30 minute mark of midnight, with residents all across the island and Phang Nga Bay hearing and feeling its rumble.

As of 1.15am, Facebook users in Sam Kong, Chao Fa, Koh Kaew, Chalong Pier, Rawai Kathu, Patong, Ban Manik, Pakkhlok, Kamala, Cherng Talay, Thalang, and across in Phanga and in Krabi's Ao Nang checked in to The Phuket News Facebook feed.

Facebook users Orphan Homes and Thiwa Wah, were the first to cite a report, from the Thailand Seisomology Bureau (TSB), noting that the quake was of a 4.3 magnitude on the RS, and its epicentre was also off Koh Yao, at 7.87N, 98.54E, felt in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga.

However, by the time The Phuket News was finally able to access the TSB website, the quake was logged as a 4.7, with its epicentre at 7.84N, 98.52E.

By 2am, however, it was adjusted to 4.5. at 7.84N, 98.51E. Its depth, which was initially reported as 8 km deep, was adjusted to 11km.

The sea-sourced fault movement was the third to be felt in a 20 hour period in the Phang Nga Bay.

According to Thailand's Seismology Bureau, the first was of 4.6 magnitude with an epicentre at 7.85, 98.54 longitude, with a depth of 4km, and then at precisely 12.25pm, an aftershock of 3.2 magnitude occured at 7.83 N, and 98.54. at a depth of only 1km.

Third quake rattles Phuket, Phang Nga

Phuket:- Phuket and Phang Nga were rattled by a third quake of 4.7 magnitude late Wednesday night.

The Seismology Bureau of the Meteorological Department reported that the quake happened south of Koh Yao 30 minutes after midnight or 0.30 am Thursday. Its epicenter was about eight kilometers under the earth’s surface.

Koh Yao is part of Phang Nga but it is closer to Phuket.

The first quake also happened near Koh Yao. It was measured at 4.6 magnitude and it happened at 4:18 am Wednesday. The first quake’s epicenter was 10 kilometers under the earth’s surface.

Then at 12:25 pm, a second earthquake, measuring 3.2 in magnitude, happened halfway between Phuket and Koh Yao. Its epicenter was about 1 kilometer below the earth's surface.

The latest quake was felt in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi. Residents of the three southern provinces reported on social networks that they felt the quake. Most of them posted messages that they felt the latest one was stronger.

No tsunami warning was issued for the latest quake and two previous ones.

Although no tsunami warning was issued, Morgan or Sea Gypsy people, who live on the Rawai beach in Mueang Phuket district, evacuated and took a shelter at park in front of a resort.

Tambon Rawai Municipality Mayor Aroon Soros rushed to the spot with his officials to take care of the sea gypsy people. He also ordered some officials to watch the sea level.

The Rawai sea gypsy people were transported back to their homes at 2:30 am after it was certain that no tsunami happened.

In the meantime, sea gypsy people who live on Koh Sireh in Tambor Rassada also evacuated to a school about two kilometers away from their village. They returned home about an hour later.

The earth crust is realigning after the major movement in Nepal. Expect fault lines from Ranong to Chiangmai to follow suit.

Woken up by a quake for the second consecutive night.

BTW, abitmiffed, that's a fairly minor fault-line and in theory would never produce "The Big 1". But it does seem quite active right now.

In the same area, some people noticing a light or distant earthquake, others not. Does it maybe depend on the consistency of the ground, like a thick or a thin layer of sand on top of the layer of rock? Maybe some Californian who has lived through a lot of quakes can shed light on this.

Yeah, because the rest of Thailand is otherwise so morally, spiritually, and culturally clean, ha ha. Best laugh I had this morning.

ANYWAY, I read a geological report that said Phuket sits on solid rock, whereas places built on soft ground (like Bangkok) are much more vulnerable to quake damage.

Klong Marui fault line causes earthquake in Koh Yao



BANGKOK: -- The 4.6 magnitude earthquake which was felt in Phuket, Phang-nga and Krabi provinces on Wednesday morning was caused by the movement of Klong Marui fault line in the Andaman Sea, said Mr Burin Vechbanthoeng, deputy director-general of Meteorological Department, on Thursday.

The tremor which occurred at 4.18 am and an aftershock which occurred at 12.25 pm on Thursday was not strong enough to cause a tsunami although the epicenter was about four kilometers under the seabed near Koh Yao district of Phang-nga in the Andaman Sea.

He explained that the movement of the Klong Marui fault line was not in the vertical direction which would have caused the flow of massive seawater to fill up the void resulting to a tsunami.

However, he said that officials of the department would keep close watch of Klong Marui fault line to try to determine why more power was released from the fault line in the sea than that on land.

Meanwhile, Mr Somboon Kositanont, director of geological environment office, attributed the movement of Klong Maarui fault line to the adjustments of earth plates as a result of earthquakes in Nepal and Papua New Guinea.

But he assured that it was unlikely the Klong Marui fault line would cause a big earthquake.

Anybody or his wife getting earthquake/tsunami nervous, consider a subscription to link tsunami warning system, comes from Germany, if wherever in the world an earthquake occurs which could generate a tsunami, you get a text message straight away, even before the event can be found in the PTWC (Pacific Tsunami Warning Center) website.
