CP All responds to 7-Eleven boycott

Unfortunately, this is the 21st century and the modern 7-11s, Family Marts and supermarkets will always beat the ugly mom and pop stores. It's business.

While I personally would prefer to support small businesses, let's be frank, would you buy from these small and unclean non air conditioned provision shops or would you prefer the nice, bright and cool 7-11s?

Typically I go out of my way (not real far) to go to a mom and pop shop. My dislike for huge corporations grows daily. I also appreciate mom a pop shops because I like like to drink beer anytime I wish.

Freedom to exercise choice is a wonderful thing. I go to both.

After living/ working in Thailand for 10 years (and living in a tourist town) I have a lot of respect for Seven-Eleven and Family-Mart employees. They are usually well trained (depends if the manager cares) and are more enthusiastic than the ones I find in a local soi ma & pa shot. One can go and pay your utility or phone bills at a7-11; purchase minutes for your phone; get a sandwich or Ma-Ma Noodle heated up; and in a tourist town these poor employees have to deal with punching in the code number on the customer's phone for more minutes because they haven't figured it out; deal with various rude nationalities; and of course drunks. I find these employees with great people skills. I wouldn't have the patience.

I am in a large condo complex with a 7 11

So either I go to 7 11 that is 200 yards away, or take a 15 minute walk to the mall

As of the 3rd quarter 2014 there were 7965 7/11 stores in Thailand of which 3514 were owned by CP directly

Yes, it wonderful to still have that choice. Thats why I said I typically go out of my way to mom and pop shops, its not the small independent shops that is the threat for loosing that choice. If you take a deep look into CP ALL you will not find a pleasant picture. I am not a tree huger by any means, but I do have a conscience for people and the environment.

Thailand lacks organized consumers, labor unions and the majority of the people is kept poor and stupid.

Therefore the door is wide open for companies like CP and a few more to rule out competition and exploit the country.

CP owns the whole chain from animal food to the processed meat in the shop that they also own. It's outrageous that simple processed pork meat products are sold at up to twice the price that the same products cost in Europe.

Thailand was never colonized by a foreign country, they are still colonized and exploited by their own elite!

This is not a socialist state and we can eat as we like. Sure, develop a boycott if you wish. Folks everywhere are highly driven by cost, quality and value. And that is why 7/11 and MCD thrive.

MacDonalds? Quality? Are you kidding? I haven't eaten at a MacDonalds for years now, I can get a bowl of noodles for a lower cost, better taste, and at least marginally better nutritional value. So I am definitely driven by cost, quality, and value which keeps me AWAY from MacDonalds.

I do go to 7/11 almost every day though.

I like the ridiculous alcoholic beverage regulations because that way I can time my visits to my local 7-11 or Family Mart so I don't encounter persons buying beer or other imbibes.

I really wouldn't know because -- since the beer buying hours are conveniently posted -- I'm not in the 7-11 when the bloated, aggressive, angry, red-faced, spitting, raging torrents of humanity are in there buying their beer and ciggies to go with it.

When I first came here I used to try avoiding the big corporations like Tesco, 7-11, Big C etc. and try to support small local 'mom and pop' type businesses.

Until the small local businesses started trying to rip me off and overcharge me for their goods. Never been ripped off at 7-11, air conditioned, always well stocked, prices marked, normally fairly polite service from staff.

Chantaburi province was 'colonized' by the French from 1900-1910, which is why if you go there you will see some rather nice colonial buildings, rather than the usual concrete eyesores redolent of every Thai city and town.

I wonder how only one province in a country can be colonized.

King Rama 5 did some exchanges of areas with the French in the east and the Britisch in the west in a succesfull attempt to avoid colonization at that time. You can find the details on internet.
