The national park there is closed. Your earliest option will be October 15.

Only daytrips possible BTW, there is no accommodation on Tachai.

I operate a tourism business in Khao Lak from where the boats to Koh Ta Chai depart, and I can fully confirm that due to closure of the marine national park, it is impossible to go to the island, and to the Similan and Surin Islands, till October 15. It is correct that there is no overnight accommodation at Koh Ta Chai.

There is a rumor that Tachai will be closed to tourist for the next 2 years.

Words came from a tour guide (farang).

If this is true, more tourist to already overfilled Similan next season.

As far as I know that is not true, but you never know with these processes here.

To a certain extend it would make sense though, the number of tourists to Tachai has increased dramatically the last 2 years, percentage wise much, much more than Similans.

Yes, with people comes trash. Think about the cigarette butt issue last year with Chinese tourists, and the vast majority of the Tachai tourists are Chinese. Edited by stevenl

Number of visitors to Koh Ta Chai and Similan has exploded due to Chinese tour groups, effortlessly filling in the gap left by fewer Russians. Last high season, one day there were 1200 visitors at Koh Ta Chai (size 12 square kilometers).

And since they all stay on the beach or the reefs close to the island for some snorkeling (without being able to swim of course) the square meter pressure is much higher than 12 square km indicates.

I'm just really glad the good divesites at Tachai are too deep for snorkeling, or they'd be ruined by now.
