Over 2,000 Thais & Burmese celebrate Singkhon Pass inauguration

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 23 May 2015 (NNT) – Over 2,000 Thai and Burmese people celebrated the inauguration of Singkhon Pass in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

The opening ceremony of Singkhon Pass was co-chaired by Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Weera Sriwattanatrakul and Regional Minister of Commerce for Taninthayi Region U Thein Win. The event featured cultural performances of both countries and also saw the release of a tourist caravan bound for Myeik City.

Mr. Weera said the premier hoped the inauguration of Singkhon Pass would boost trade between Thailand and Myanmar. The governor also voiced his confidence that the special checkpoint would help push up trade value by over 10 billion baht per year.

To mark a further step towards stronger friendship, Thailand and Myanmar have agreed to offer special exceptions to citizens of each other’s countries. Burmese citizens are allowed to enter the Kingdom and spend two days and one night within Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Thai citizens holding a Border Pass are allowed to stay within the districts of Taninthayi and Myeik for no more than 14 days. Those holding a temporary Border Pass can visit the two districts for no more than seven days.

interesting indeed as this checkpoint would be very easy to reach even from BKK. I hope some Farang from Phrachuap province can report soon

Allowing farang to use this border would create a lot of 10 $ notes..

To some of the questions above, unfortunately, Singkhorn isn't yet open to us farangs.

All that's changed is that Myanmar and Thais are able to use the crossing 7 days per week, whereas before it was only open for them to cross on Saturdays.

It would be really handy for folk living in Cha Am, Hua Hin and Pranburi etc if Singkhorn was open to farangs. I guess it probably will be at some point in the future.
