Or, Your GF (from Thailand) is flying to visit you in UK.

Chances are she will not get a visa without a return ticket (she needs to show intent to return to Thailand)

One way tickets are relatively expensive (i.e. 2 one way tickets are much more costly than a return).

You could buy your one way ticket on the same airline as your GF's return ticket and fly together.

If you intent to fly to Thailand on a one way ticket you will require a Visa.

Having a single ticket will have no effect on a visa application, in fact the UKVI specifically advise against purchasing a ticket until a visa is issued.

If your girlfriend is asked for evidence of a return flight by a Border Force Officer at the UK Border, and she doesn't have one, that could entail further questioning.

However, there is no need to have a return ticket but the visa holder does need to satisfy the officer that she will leave the UK, and has the means to do so.

So why dont you buy the return ticket and send her a copy before she flies out and let her explain if asked? Edited by saakura

It's perfectly within the rules to travel with a single ticket but, as I said, she may be subject to questioning by the Border Force Officer at the UK Border, she might also get problems with Thai at BKK who might not want her to board the flight to London, but they would be wrong to deny her boarding.

Just to add that yes the airline might give her a hard time - doing it the other way, the first time I flew to Thailand on a 1 way ticket the airline refused to let me check in until I purchased a return ticket (which I later cancelled). The next time I knew better and argued with them that I didn't need a return with the visa I was on and they eventually let me on.

siam legal who have done the visa inform me that we have stated she is coming for two months and that it is fine to have one way ticket for her, as we are returning to thailand in september together and if asked we just tell them that at customs

It seems you have the advice you need from your legal rep, so up to you.

Just a thought, since you effectively are buying 3 single (one way) fares, is it not more economical to get her a return ticket? Then you can tag onto the return flight one-way?

Then you also have backup document for her in the event she gets a hard time on ariival?

"then we want to fly back together with another return ticket as we will stay in thailand 3 weeks to get married and then fly back"

Going to get married here in Thailand, then figure to process an immigrant visa for her to the UK, all within three (3) weeks? I think you're overly optimistic in your timing. Hopefully, someone else more familiar with UK immigration processing will weigh in on this item.

Take this advice .... Their is no requirement to have a return ticket when entering the UK. You could send her a letter to hand to immigration, if anyone asks for an explanation, although I expect that it will be not be needed. Make sure that she has your UK phone number in case of communication difficulties with immigration. Most immigration staff at Heathrow now speak Indiaglish and your girlfriend will not be able to understand them.

Your big problem will be .... Leaving Bangkok with a one way ticket. Most airlines will not issue a boarding pass to UK visitor visa holders, that are only flying one way from Bangkok. This has absolutely nothing to do with UK immigration, it is an airline rule. You will need to sort this out and get a confirmation in writing for her to take to check in. I promise you ... The chances of her being turned away at Bangkok are extremely high.

Buy her a return ticket bkk/UK UK/bkk ... and bin the return leg of that ticket. The cost of a one way is very much the same as a return ticket. Your loss will be minimal, if any, and your problems will be solved.

As for marrying in Bkk ... Why? It will not help you to obtain a visa. Being married in no way increases the possibility of obtaining a visa. Apply instead for a fiancé visa. You can start right now (on-line) and save the application until ready to send, you can make the appointment for depositing documents to coincide with your return to bkk. It will save you a lot of time and rushing around.

Try to make a good job of a simple task rather than a bolix of a complicated one.

As theoldgit has already said twice, there is no requirement in the UK immigration rules for a visitor to have a return or onward ticket.

But if she is asked for one by UK immigration (not customs as Siam Legal told you; she wont get to customs until after she has passed through immigration!) then she will need to show that she either has such a ticket or the means with which to purchase one.

This money can come from her resources, yours, a third party's or any combination of these.

Airline check in staff should be aware of this, so if she is given a problem at check in she should ask to speak to a supervisor. As she has a valid UK visa, the airline will not be liable if she is refused entry. Which she wont be if she can satisfy one of the above two conditions if asked to do so.

However, most visitors are simply waved through after their passport and visa have been checked; so it is unlikely that she will be questioned at all.

I agree that she should have your phone number to hand in just case she is questioned, though.

The cost of a 33 month spouse visa and a 6 month fiance visa are the same; £956 (paid for reasons UKVI refuse to divulge, in USD!)

Whichever route a couple take is their choice, but one reason for marrying in Thailand and then applying for a spouse visa rather than applying for a fiance visa and then marrying in the UK within the 6 month life of the visa is that it saves having to make an application for Further Leave to Remain after the marriage at a cost of £649 if applying by post, £1049 if applying in person.

The OP's airfare to Thailand and back may be more than this; but if he is going anyway then marrying in Thailand makes more financial sense.

dix17,

If the only reason for you going to Thailand with her is to marry, then you could marry while she is in the UK as a visitor. She could then return to Thailand alone to submit her settlement application as your wife. You should contact you local registry office for more details on marrying in the UK.

See Apply to join family living permanently in the UK for how to apply for her settlement visa; whichever route you choose.

You may also find UK settlement visa basics useful; although it does need updating the basics are all there.
