Oil slick seen off Mae Rampoeng beach in Rayong

RAYONG: -- An oil slick stretching several kilometers long has been found floating in the sea off Mae Rampoeng beach in Muang district of Rayong Monday morning with some of the oil slick washed ashore.

Officials from Tapong Tambon Administration Organisation and Khao Laem Ya-Koh Samed national park were sent to Mae Rampoeng beach to investigate. Oil samples were also collected and sent to a laboratory of the IRPC company for testing.

Mr Thaveep Saengkrachang, chair of Tapong TAO, complained that the sea off Mae Rampoeng had been occasionally hit by oil slicks and, worse, authorities had been unable to arrest any wrongdoers.

He called on authorities concerned to step up their monitoring of the sea to look out for perpetrators of oil spills.

An environment official of IRPC company, Mr Anucha Petcharat, said the tests would determine the type of oil. He added that officials of the Harbour Department would check if there are big vessels floating in the sea which might be responsible for the oil spills.

Very sad I spent a month on the beach in April and had intended to go back.

Come down to Laem Mae Phim instead! ;) Clean beaches (by Thai standards), relatively clean water, beautiful location. Coming from BKK you'd be going past Ban Phe, past Suan Son. Large Swedish/Scandinavian population during high season (September to March, roughly), but some farang here all year. Whole beach area ready to take off for foreign tourism, and some of the essential 'clean-up' measures are already being taken to get there faster. You won't regret it.

Went to Mae Lampoeng earlier this year and it was a dump then. Even before this latest oil spill, you'd do much better by yourself if you came to Laem Mae Phim rather than going to Mae Lampoeng.

IMHO.
