Koh Larn faces growing environmental threat from huge garbage

PATTAYA: -- Garbage problem is deteriorating in Koh Larn with local authorities and people now pondering of having a garbage disposal of their own fearing that in near future Pattaya people may reject garbage from the island for disposal on shore.

Information from the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Public Organisation) revealed that 8,000-10,000 tourists visit Koh Larn daily on week days, or an average 1.8 million tourists a year.

But at weekend, the number rises multiple times per day, it said.

The surge in tourist numbers is posing concern, particularly the amount of garbage generated daily.

A local community leader Sorasak Thongbongpet said Koh Larn has a garbage dump site which is only 700 metres away from Sameh beach with a hill blocking in between.

He said 20 tons of garbage is generated daily in weekdays but will rise to 30 tons on weekends.

Disposal of garbage in Koh Larn is handled by Pattaya City Office Koh Larn Branch by sending trucks out to collect household garbages in two shifts, morning and afternoon.

After tourists return on shore in Pattaya, boats will be used to load 20 tons of garbages to dispose of in Pattaya daily.

The excess amount will be dumped at Koh Larn dump site for disposal the next day in Pattaya.

But the excess amount has accumulated daily and is posing environmental problem.

He said local authorities and people have realised the rising amount of accumulated garbages that is deteriorating and have proposed local administration to have its own, either a garbage separation plant or a disposal plant to resolve the environmental threat problem.

They were hopeful that the Pattaya City Administration may agree to the proposal before garbage problem gets out of control and threatens not only environment but tourism of the island.

Must be the worst English sentence I have ever read on TV.

I hadn't been for a while and was very surprised at the amount of rubbish I saw littering areas just off the main road from the ferry port to Samae beach. It certainly did not look like an official dump.........

On such a small island, and there are many in the region, the use of plastic bags and polystyrene trays should be banned totally. This would be difficult, perhaps impossible to enforce on the mainland or larger islands. Not too difficult to do on the small islands. Ensure all metal, glass and plastic bottles are separated for recycling, then you may find the problem becomes easier to manage. But then again I admit to rose coloured glasses !!!

So this is the final resting place of all the Thai garbage one has to endure on a daily basis...wai2.gif

That is the national problem in a nutshell, garbage has no final resting place and seems to be everywhere. The PM could, if he so wished, use article 44 (or whatever the alternative name for martial law currently is) to really clamp down on such environmental vandalism and force the Thais to act responsibly. That one act could make Thailand a much greener and ultimately happier place and the "free" world might even step back from the soon to be imposed sanctions. Your call Mr PM !

Hmmm

Just curious if maths is still being taught in schools

These are tourism figures so the laws of mathematics do not apply here. They probably count each visitor twice as a passenger on the ferry each way which would make the total and average figures make more sense - Must have had someone from TAT help them.

The sentence is perhaps overly long and punctuation lacks a few commas but TIT!! Mai pen Rai. Surely the meaning is clear enough for you, isn't it? Get a life!
