Man in wheelchair arrested for robbing NYC bank

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man in a wheelchair has been arrested two days after he pocketed $1,212 in a daytime bank robbery, authorities announced Friday.

Kelvin Dennison, 23, was picked up by officers at a hospital two days after he rolled into a Santander Bank branch in Queens Monday afternoon and claimed to be armed, police said.

"Give me all you have," he told a teller, according to court papers. "I have a gun."

The teller then passed him the cash before he pushed himself out of the bank and then fled down the street in his wheelchair, police said. Authorities released an image of a man in a wheelchair leaving the bank taken from a store's surveillance camera.

When Dennison went to a Queens hospital two days later, someone recognized him and called police, prosecutors said. Authorities didn't say why Dennison went to the hospital.

When he was questioned by investigators, Dennison told them he was in a wheelchair after being injured in a shooting, a spokeswoman for the Queens district attorney's office told the New York Times (http://nyti.ms/1HD7Hok).

Dennison was charged with robbery and is being held on $15,000 bail. Attempts to reach his attorney for comment on Friday were unsuccessful.

Maybe he's desperate. Note that he's being held. As long as the police have him they are responsible for his care including medical bills if he can't pay them. They are between a rock and a hard place.

This would be the free way to get 24/7 care because the police don't even have the option of ignoring a serious federal beef which bank robbery is, even if they think they are being scammed. Maybe he just made his problems become their problems.

Only $15,000 bail requested for "armed" bank robbery. The next step is to release him without bail to get rid of him.

Edit. If he truly has no or little money there is free medical care available through Medicaid so it would be interesting to know what's up.

It is not that simple to qualify for medicaid. You have to have no resources and if you have resources they must go to paying your medical bills first.

I bet he needed medical treatment and could not afford it.

Nah, Obama made that stuff free for people like him.

Just another bad guy perhaps and not sure why some feel the need to constantly make excuses for people this.

Dennison has at least two prior arrests, both from earlier this year.

He was busted on Feb. 14 for criminal contempt and on Jan. 27 for acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17.

Hours before the heist, he got into a dispute with his mother at their home, and she called police, sources said. A domestic-incident report was taken.

He was busted in January after allegedly throwing a kitchen utensil at a 5-year-old in his home, sources said. No one was hurt.

Very true and I mentioned that he'd have to have little or no resources. With arrest, it's simply that anyone in custody is the responsibility of the department that arrested him. You can't lock a man up and deny him medical care. The hospitals know this and won't let the department off the hook.

I have literally seen police wanting to arrest an injured suspect for drunk driving and an accident post guards in and out of the hospital so they could arrest the perp after he was discharged.

"Police officers are required to seek medical care for individuals injured while committing a crime or being apprehended. However, hospital officials say police officers sometimes refrain from arresting a wounded suspect so the law enforcement agency will not be on the hook for the suspect's medical costs."
