Local NLD head given proper burial after being shot dead

RANGOON: -- The body of the National League for Democracy’s head in Einnel Village, Hpa-an Township, who was gunned down, has been buried in accord with the Kayin tradition.

Saw Johnny, 51, chairman of Kawthinshu’s NLD office, was shot dead by an unknown group at his home in Einnel just after midnight on July 2. He moved there from Kawthinshu a few months ago.

According to Kayin tradition, anyone who does not die of natural causes cannot be cremated immediately. Instead, the body was buried temporarily and then excavated and cremated after a few days. Relatives and NLD colleagues attended the funeral but no village administrators were present. He is survived by a wife, a 14-year-old daughter and two sons, 11 and eight.

Saw Johnny had been helping villagers in land disputes and had been involved in a well-publicised anti-narcotic campaigner, said his friends, adding that his murder showed there was no rule of law.
