Hi All,

So booked tickets abroad from Bangkok to London in the future, of course this flight allows more than 25kg, but just getting a cheap 'Nok Air' flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok will only allow 15kg, unless you pay up of course, so I am sure others have had this problem, what did you guys do? Or how what airline or little extra payments did you make so you could take more than 15kg cheap. I saw Thai Airways allows higher, but it gets pricey... Thanks all.

Regards,

David

AirAsia has add on luggage from 15 up to 40 kg in varying amounts. Find a cheaper fare and then add the baggage and you'll still come out on top probably.

For Nok, join the Nok Fan club and I think you get an extra 5kg. Or you can add on more from memory. Might be worth checking that with a dummy booking.

In any case, it is better to pre-pay & over estimate what you might be checking in - than to be stung at the airport on the day - IMHO

Bangkok Airways standard-allowance is 20 kgs, but the free frequent-flyer card allows another 10 kgs, from your first flight, and they often have sale-tickets down to B1500 each-way.

In truth, coming back from the UK with a very full load, they've sometimes let me load 34 kgs of hold-luggage.

Last plus is that they fly to/from Swampy, not DMK, so you don't need to change airports with a pile of luggage !

Some ThaiSmile flight starting at 990, 20 kg included.

65 Bath/kg of overweight,

No idea how strict they are,

Yep - Nok air fan club does get you 20kg free and another 5kg is pretty cheap - I'm thinking about 250 baht one way? For the baggage extra cost you can find out by doing a dummy run online to a point where you can abort, having been given the priced up options.

I flew in to Bangkok with an airline that had code share agreement with Bangkok Airways.

I had a separate ticket with Bangkok Airways.

I had 2 checked baggage and at check in I was asked to show them the boarding pass from my international flight.

I was lucky I kept the bording pass. The agent needed to note some infos on the bording pass.

They allowed me to check my 2 pieces to Chiangmai at no extra fees.

The Bangkok Airways bonus flyer frequent flyer scheme will give you extra baggage allowance. Air Asia will let you select the level you want and pay a reasonable fee. Air Asia has a sporting goods charge which will cover a bicycle for 300 and something baht. Very reasonable if you managed to get a rock bottom airfare from them.

Thanks for all of these suggestions, I will look into them all. We are flying with Qatar Airways, so not sure if there are any special deals connected to them going around perhaps?

Just note that nearly all of the cheaper fares will be with LCCs to DMK instead of BKK.

Did you check Thai Lion? No baggage charge and you can regularly obtain fares for around 1000 if you book 5-7 days ahead.

Loads of flights a day and brand spanking new aircraft..........

Thai Smile would be my vote.

You don't need to change airports, and the promo fare is around Bht1,500 each way including 20kg of luggage.

Thanks all, we did indeed go with Thai Smile in the end, and also booked the return tickets too, the weight was quite good 20kg, on the way back though, if we are over we will have to leave some with a friend in Bangkok first and get it later or sent over.

Thai Lion would have to be the worst choice as they allow 15 KG only for free domestically, but their excess-luggage fees are outrageous - don't forget this is an offshoot of Asia's most dodgy Airline, LION INDONESIA

Lion Air in Indo have a bad safety record but they aren't even the worst airline on that front in Indo let alone SE Asia let alone Asia - you clearly know little about smaller airlines in central asia and even neighbouring countries to Thailand (eg Cambodia & Laos airlines). And there are a few Thai charter airlines that I would not fly.

Thai Lion are a completely different sister airline to Lion and majority Thai owned as all airlines in Thailand are, only 18 months old so we have to wait and see.

Safety wise it's more about the regulatory environment which is much better in Thailand than Indo. However, don't forget that Thailand was rated lower than even Laos and Cambodia in the recent ICAO safety audit.

Qatar has a code share agreement with Bangkok Air, on Qatar's website you should be able to book and pay for a ticket starting and ending at CNX. Even on two tickets Bangkok Air will allow you to check in At CNX print your QR Boarding pass and passport control, you will follow CIP signs at BKK.

Your luggage allowance will be that of the longest flight, thus Qatar's in this case.

Same on the way back.
