Deputy police chief lends Ban Kru Noi much-needed support

BANGKOK: -- A PRIVATELY run shelter has been given a new lease on life just weeks before it crumbled under the weight of debts, leaving up to 65 children without any support.

"I think I will be able to keep this shelter running for about three more years," Ban Kru Noi founder Nuannoi Timkul said after receiving a visit from deputy national police chief General Pongsapat Pongcharoen yesterday.

Pongsapat visited the shelter yesterday to not just offer moral support, but also to agree to help pay back the money she owes to loan sharks. This time her debts have gone beyond the Bt1-million point.

The last time they met in 2010, she owed more than Bt10 million.

"I want to help because I want to support her good intentions of taking care of children," Pongsapat said.

Nuannoi, now 72, said earlier this month that she planned to close down Ban Kru Noi at the end of July so she could sell the property to clear her debts.

Since 1980, Ban Kru Noi has been sheltering underprivileged children, and Nuannoi said that while her charity operations attract between Bt7,000 and Bt10,000 a week, her expenses go beyond the Bt30,000 mark.

Kudos and criticism

Nuannoi has run into money problems several times and this has been reported in media from time to time. While help does flow in, she has also received criticism from different quarters.

Her two adult children recently wrote to their mother asking her to consider closing down the shelter and spending her old age at home with their father. They explained that they could not shoulder the burden of supplying funds for long.

"If we wait longer, debts may soon grow to Bt3 million or Bt4 million, and by then even if you agree to sell the house, we won't be able to clear all the debts," the letter read.

Meanwhile, Pongsapat said yesterday that he studied the bookkeeping records of Ban Kru Noi and had full trust in Nuannoi. He said he would ask senior policemen and friends to help on condition that Nuannoi will not allow her expenses exceed her income.

How nice of the police and trusted freinds to give back some of the tea money to a worthy cause, Maybe the police read the article about philantropists...

The lady it seem receives a small amount of money a week but over spends every week around 2 times more than what she receives, good on them that will fund her for the children..
