Tips on convincing ENT surgeon to quote for a tonsillectomy?

Featured Replies

Hello

I'm in Chiang Mai at the moment, visiting from the UK.I have had fatigue issues for many years an repeated infections of sinus / ears / chest. I've been advised that having my tonsils removed is a good bet because if they are releasing poison into the blood stream then getting rid of them - rather like bad teeth - can relieve the immune system and the liver of a lot of work.

But it is expensive in the UK £2600 + So I want to get quotes for having the op in Thailand.

So far I'm meeting reluctance from Thai doctors in removing the tonsils.

I went to see a recommended ENT guy in Chiang Mai. But he was more concerned about the sinuses. He got cat scans done and noted infection and gave me antibiotics. I'm confident that he is trustworthy - he is trying to do the best by his patients byl avoid operating if he thinks it's unnecessary. So I have to respect where he's coming from.

Last time I went he saw one of my tonsils was swollen. But he didn't see that as the root of the problem.

Is there a way to get a quote for this op... so at least I know my options? Without getting into a debate about what works and doesn't?

Anyone had a tonsillectomy done here? And if so, how did you present your case to the surgeon?

Bumrumgrad Hospital in BKK shows a table of quotes for the total cost of many procedures, including tonsilectomy. As I recall it was just about US$1k, all in. This is possibly the very top hospital in Thailand and certainly one of the most expensive. Check the websites for the top Thai hospitals for other quotes.

The advice you were given is quite wrong. Tonsils play an important role in fighting infection and certainly do not 'release poisons" into the blood stream. Tonsils are lymphatic tissue, in no way analogous to teeth. And their surgical removal is nto without complications.

The only indication for tonsillectomy is multiple sore throats due to acute tonsillitis within a fairly short time. This does not sound like your problem. Rather it sounds like you may have chronic sinusitis...which tonsillectomy will not remotely improve.

I don't know of an ENT who will perform surgery that is not medically indicated just because the patient wants it...and would not recommend being treated by such a physician if you do find one.
