Buying a quality mattress in LOS is a challenge.

I would go to a shop which specialises in bedwear or a major dept store.

Take your PJs & teddy - do some practical testing.

I recently went for a firm all Latex one and I love it, love it, love it but I think I can make a good suggestion for a place to go to see a wide range of styles but with really excellent and almost shockingly competent English speaking service. That place is Index Living Mall on Sukhumwit. I went everywhere and was shopping for over a month but that place really worked for me. The contrast to all the other places I went was DRAMATIC.

I should say they do NOT have a range of BRANDS like most places and some people would rule them out based on that. I found their limited brand thing actually made it MUCH EASIER to make my choice.

Once you get into comparing 30 brands plus all the models within those brands, actually TOO MUCH choice.

I reckon all the places have some kind of "promotion" going on. If buying from Index be sure to get their card as you get an additional discount off the probable "promotion" that you'll get. To be clear, I am not saying they are the cheapest as I doubt that, but they are competitive. I would know that too after shopping so hard around town for my new mattress.

I bought a 20KB mattress that gave me backache. So I went to Ikea and bought a 5000B foam one that I put on top of the one I dont like.

I actually went to INDEX today. Friendly staff, but was quite obvious that he pushed the product of his company only. "SEALY good, everything other no good!" Which happened to be a 110'000 Baht or so SEALY, which he generously discounted to 55K. Made me a bit suspicious, also I like the mattress. What brand did you get? Thanks to everybody. MS>

Sorry to hear you encountered hard sell there. Maybe bad luck. Oh well. They've got Serta, Theraflex (Index living mall brand only supposedly using USA materials), and an Index brand. I forget they even had Sealy.

The 50 percent is a promotion they have now.

Of course nobody ever pays full.

I wouldn't be skeptical. Just grab one at 50 percent if you find one you like there.

Walk around to the other parts of the display and ask for product books. Feel free to even ask for another salesperson if you think you can do better.

I bought a Theraflex, no springs, mid-range price, "discounted" similarly.

I had never bought a Latex mattress or no spring mattress so it was a bit of a risk. Wasn't sure about the feel of it in the store but after some adjustment period my favorite mattress ever.

Of course they have Latex mattresses that are softer and they generally cost more. I prefer firmer.

Mine is Sealy from Index. I dont like it at all.

I'm sure that mattresses here cost about 2-3 times what they would in Europe, even with 50% discount.

I bought a latex one once in Europe and returned it within a couple of days. It made me sweat. The regular sprung replacement lasted me about 10 years and was still going strong when I sold the house and came here.

We're not in Europe.

I have read "sleeping hot" is an issue with latex in some cases but I haven't had that problem.

There are pros and cons to the different choices.

It cost me 16990 baht for a kingsize and its really soft , just like the best you can buy in Europe.

This is the one I bought :

Choose medium firm, believe me , its more than soft enough . I tried another matress at Index , price was 40k and it was not as soft as Ikea.

You have to pay for transportation to Pattaya , I think it was 3000 , but still a lot cheaper than the local or imported brand names here.

Might be worth to check Mattress City on Sukhumvit. Probably only crap but don't cost anything to check.

Yes. If I was looking for a new "solid" mattress I would go there and pay to have it delivered. So nice to go to a shop where the sticker price is the the price you pay and is fair and not open to negotiation/overcharging.

The foam one I bought there came rolled up so I just put it in the back of my pick-up. Easy.

Ikea also do "toppers" that seem to be good quality and reasonably priced.

My wife and I just moved back from the good old USA and brought over some new king size memory foam mattresses and 5 1/2 inch toppers. We have a couple extra because we landed up buying a smaller house. If anyone is interested, they will be here in a couple weeks. Please feel free to private message me anytime.

I think I recall that memory foam (and toppers) is the one more associated with sleeping hot. I avoided buying memory foam.

The location looks about right. I can't remember the exact name and I'm not in town right now otherwise I would go and check. The place when I had a walk around was run by a young man and his wife. You just have to ask him to show you a mattress with the particular firmness you require. Not a lot of stock but quality and price-wise seemed as good as/better value than all the other places.

Another vote for making the trip to Ikea. The 4" foam topper I purchased there 3 years ago has made a big difference in my sleep comfort. I had purchased a "High Quality" mattress topper at a furniture show 5 years previously and though it was very good at first, the fibers inside compressed over the years and it became very hard. Another problem with fiber filled toppers is they absorb body odors and over time can get quite smelly...impossible really to clean. I have not experienced odor retention with the foam topper.

After looking at all options and shops incl. IKEA, I am even more confused and unsure what to buy. Firstly I found out that practically all mattresses are locally produced, even the ones the say are imported.

Off course, with the empty stores, staff are trying hard to sell and most of them have no clue what they talking about. Today at a certain chic store I was the only customer at 15.00 and 4 -6 staff at times followed me around step by step....Quite annoying....The leader repeating over and over; "You want shoft?" Who trains these people? They only push their own products if the are company-based or just rush you from apple to oranges to bananas, without even understanding what you are asking or looking for. Hard to put up with this b.s.

Anyway....I am down to SEALY "Jasper", THERAFLEX "Respiro" or possibly DUNLOPILLO " Bolton". Prices from 37-49 K. As not 1 shop could actually show me on paper or online what materials are used, i.e. Dunlopillo was offered as "latex, natural topper", but on website shows "special foam", SEALY sales-guy showed me a sample of NASA foam & latex, but could not show anywhere this was in "Jasper", online nothing to find....

Theraflex I can't even find a website? Any of you feedback on these brands with a higher end one and especially interested about comfort and longevity.

If I were you I would just visit IKEA Bangna and try out the mattresses for yourself, find one you like and just order it. You'll save money and dont have to worry much about problems later , IKEA offer 10 year warranty on their mattresses.

At the very worst you can have some smoked salmon and meatballs (separate courses) in their restaurant and pick up some cheap chocolate in their supermarket (33B/100g when I was there last). The drive is easy and the parking is free.
