If anyone's bothered by their receipt checks and no bag policy, Makro, like many cash and carry or bulk discount store in the west is actually a club, not open to the general public, you're supposed to apply for memberships and they would have laid out the terms and conditions when you applied.

In practice, at the till they have a card/barcode that they scan when people without membership turn up.

As for checking receipts, especially with bulk items, other than fraud, mistake do happen like cashier not multiplying the number of items correctly or scanning the individual barcode instead of the pack/case barcode which could cost either the customer or company either way.

And for the free gift, at least Makro put their free gift promotion item in the system and this would be printed in the receipt saying what you are entitled to, from what you purchased, most other supermarkets leave this to the 'knowledge' of the staff and that will pick the gift for you... and most of the promotion at Makro is geared towards moms-and-pops store, say if they buy 24 case of Red bull, and the promotion might be they get 1 bottle extra free Redbull, to us, it's only 10 baht and hardly worth the bother, but for these small time shop, if they can sell it on, it's extra 10 baht profit for free

Bit of history - 25 years ago when Makro was relatively new and a club, as digbeth mentioned above, you needed to become a member. That meant showing the registration papers of your business. They gave you two membership cards (like a credit card) - I still have my original one, but use it only occasionally, these days. Some time after the 97 crash, if I remember clearly, Makro started to change its policy about the general public - they began with member-free Sundays. Over time, they relaxed this change even more, so that pretty much anybody can shop there now. It was always a no-bags place, being a bulk wholesaler, so anyone bitchin' about this should remember the history of the place - basically it is not run for day shoppers.

Before Makro opened way out in the suburbs, many small shops had to buy their stuff from smallish wholesale places (some had direct delivery trucks) and which were run by Chinese merchants who were something of a Mafia-type of operation - you bought from them or else. They actually weren't all that "heavy", but still, there was an aura of unpleasantness in the air. When Makro opened on Srinakharin, it proved quite a boon to small operators with the competition it offered.
