BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha this morning presided over the meeting of the Police Police Commission to pick the new national police chief to succeed Pol Gen Somyot Pumpanmuong who is due to retire end of September.

The meeting was held at the army barrack at the First Army Infantry Division of the Royal Guards on Vibhabadi Rangsit road.

Media journalists were not allowed to enter the army barrack to cover the event.

So far five candidates to the top police selection were screened to only two strong candidates, Pol Gen Aek Angsananont, and Pol Gen Jaktip Chaichinda.

Pol Gen Aek is now 59-years-old and will retire September next year. He is the most senior officer among five candidates to the top post

Pol Gen Aek was also former candidate to the top police position last year but lost to Pol Gen Somyot after the military took power.

In his young schooling age, Pol Gen Aek came from the same secondary school as Prime Minister Prayut.

However he did not came from the Police Cadet Academy same as other previous national police chiefs who almost all finished from the police academy.

Another strong candidate is Pol Gen Jaktip.

Pol Gen Jaktip still has five years before retirement.

He has skills and experience in investigation and had earlier shown outstanding performances in investigating criminal cases that involved national security.

Last time Prayut hosted a meeting there, nobody left...

Do the police not have adequate meeting rooms in their own headquarters?

Does the choice of venue send a not particularly subtle message?
