The list is endless. Especially if you are a homeowner. Or musician. Or photographer. Or sports enthusiast. Or ???? Or don't want to pay the higher prices here! LOL

With that being said, shopping in Bangkok pales in comparison to back home! We always leave with empty suitcases and come back with them full.

My favorite is to leave with no suitcases and come back with big beer coolers full of stuff. Because beer coolers here are generally expensive crap, if you can find one at all.

There are decent to very good guitar/music stores in Bangkok. Prices still much higher than same models in USA generally. Music Collection chain carries Martin and Taylor. Some boutique shop in WTC has some spendy one off stuff. Suriya Music here in Pattaya carries some Martins, or did last time I looked.

Yes, Suriya Pattaya services the market for gear suited to the prices locals can afford - which is understandable.

As for the good gear in BKK - The String Shop Soi 24, Concept Music (L3 Central Chitlom) ....I have found their prices for electric guitars and gear to be cheaper than most other places in Asia and on par with the USA (if using USA Ebay is an accurate guide)

Cinnabon!!!

Some food items that are available in BKK are still not readily available here in Pattaya. Specifics....Frozen tubs of Cool Whip, variety of cake and other food mixes, and often fresh Brussels Sprouts and celery!!

I buy celery regularly in Pattaya.

What about Chatuchak? Other than the tourist schlock what are expats shopping for there other than random surprises?

My wife has a cafe here so we go to Bangkok and places like Chatuchak to get stuff not available in Pattaya like furniture, fittings & decor items. That's apart form what we bring in from overseas to give us a different look to the other retail food/drink outlets around.

I also get all my heart medication from a Public Hospital with a Cardiac Clinic and good specialists in Bangkok. Much cheaper than here and only costs me 600B to see the specialist for my routine checkup every 4 months.

Is it at all possible to get Distilled Water anywhere in Bangkok? Not the car battery stuff.

I need Distilled water for medicinal use. Can't find any in Pattaya

Really?

Have you tried Fascino already?

Heard a rumor yesterday that an Ikea store is in the works for Pattaya - supposedly in the Maprachan area. Looking forward to anything on the dark side!

Anything is possible, I suppose. But news stories last month put IKEA's newly announced second (CP Westgate in Nonthaburi) and third (northern BKK) giant stores in northern Bangkok.

Ikea plans to have three stores in Thailand in the next five years, with the third one in a new CentralPlaza project in northern Greater Bangkok. There are two Ikeas in Singapore, two in Malaysia and one in Thailand.

Yes, I understand that. I do that on my trips to the USA. DECENT clothes are so much cheaper there! Ironically they're often made in Southeast Asia. Go figure.

quality cable in a variety of sizes and colours, from AWG4 to AWG24

IP67 plugs/sockets

the motor/engine market is miniminimini in Pattaya, huge in BKK

bolts/nuts/springwashers and washers in marine quality stainless (316)

top quality HSS stuff for milling and drilling

proper marine quality fuel filter arrangements for crap and water

various quality tools

Gammel Dansk

plastic bolts/nuts/washers

For the stainless bolts and a lot of tools there are plenty of shops in the Mabtaphut area and on highway 36.

Easiest from Pattaya is to go check at Ruam Charoen in Ban Chang, just after PTT gas station on the left coming from Pattaya on Sukhumvit.

do the have all sorts of bolts/nuts in marine quality stainless? 316 steel?

Both the shop in Ban Chang and the shop on highway 36 have considerable amounts of stainless nuts and bolts. In Ban Chang I know they sell even per single piece.

These and many others cater to off shore and to the chemical plants, so they also have stainless tubing. If it's not on stock you can order.

In Ban Chang they made some sampling equipment for me on my design using stainless tubes and valves.

Indonesian food.

Is best home made, never had it properly in Thailand, but all the ingredients are available on the fresh market.

I KNOW you are totally wrong about that. Read an Indonsian cookbook (I have) and tell me again how easy it is to cook authentic Indonesian food in Thailand. Many of the ingredients are very specific and not easy (or impossible) to get here. Similarly, even many Malaysian recipes are hard to cook here. Which is even weirder.

Sorry a Lil off topic , How about a service Dentistry, is it better in Bangkok or Pattaya is it cheaper in either or better

I think it depends. Like for dentistry I wouldn't see the point of going to Bangkok for that. But for something more sophisticated like eye surgery or female to male sex changewhistling.gif , arguably better off in Bangkok.

I'm Dutch, with a father born in Indonesia, so I grew up with Indonesian food. I've been cooking it for 30 years and do have a very original Indonesian cookbook, written by Beb Vuyk, it's in Dutch.

The problem in Thailand is that you have to translate the Dutch-Bahasa/Malay names of the ingredients via English to Thai and you'll find that almost all is available on an average market in Thailand. You have to replace some of the dried herbs that the Dutch recipes often use with fresh herbs.

Today we will have Nasi Koening, my wife makes it, but it's also eaten in Muslim restaurants in Thailand, so not very difficult.
