BANGKOK: -- The government’s stimulus packages are expected to drive the economy to grow by 0.4 percent to three percent for the whole year, said Mr Krisda Jinavijarana, director of Fiscal Economics Office.

He said that money from the two packages – 136 billion baht village funds and tambon funds for small projects – and 100 billion baht in credits to be extended to small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs by commercial banks have already been injected into the economy.

If all the money have been spent as projected within this year, he said that the economy will grow by another 0.4 percent to 3 percent for the whole year.

Furthermore, Mr Krisda said the government had encouraged the private sector to invest more by providing tax incentives and individuals to spend more so as to stimulate the economy.

A committee has been set up to consider which industrial clusters would be promoted and what kinds of incentives would be provided to them, said Mr Krisda.

The dangerous thing for Thailand at the moment is that they tried pumping up the economy already. They made it way too easy for Thais to borrow and they're hocked up to their necks with new cars and other stuff they can't afford. Personal debt is running dangerously close to 100% of GDP. Any money the government tries to inject like this will likely just go towards paying off loans which will not have any impact on economic growth.
