Pattaya Declares War on Crime: Footpath Intrusion

An official discusses the importance of complying with municipal regulations on use of public space last night outside a go-go bar on Pattaya's Walking Street.

CHONBURI — Thailand's vice city, a known haven of transnational crime syndicates where sex, drugs and money are fluid commodities, isn't going to tolerate any more scofflaws. At least not where its sidewalks are concerned.

A band of Pattaya City officials, policemen and soldiers called upon its infamous Walking Street last night to demand go-go bars, vendors, nightclubs and other businesses stop violating city regulations on use of public space and keep the footpath clear.

There they discovered vendors hawking goods and parked vehicles in the street whose name is derived from its intended purpose: A pedestrian-only stretch reserved for adult entertainment and indulgence.

Among the 20-or-so-strong group was local official Morakot Noohuang, who said business operators along Walking Street have been told to keep within legal boundaries so that members of the public can fully use the public pavement.

More than half of them even said they would comply, Morakot said.

Wow, thats just amazing Bob, am going to have to go to waking street now to 'discover' this for my self, what a real shock!!!

Aye never mind the battling, gun toting, drunk driving Thai youths on Third Road every weekend, there are more serious matters like people flogging tat on the pavements.....

There was a "team" of them ( with police and army escort ) yesterday at the entrance road to our estate in Na-Jomtien demolishing (most of ) the shacks selling various things but mostly food that had sprung up over the past year on the footpath...some very unhappy Thais.

Never mind walking street. At some spots, the valued visitor will have to walk on the streets because the sidewalks are impassable. It's not the first attempt trying to give the sidewalks back to the pedestrians. After 2 weeks, it's back to "business as usual".

Pattaya Walking Street Committee and Army inspection



PATTAYA: The Chairman of the Walking Street Committee led a group of over 20 officials including Army personnel on an inspection of the street on Wednesday Night to see if local regulations were being adhered to.

Khun Metagin, the Committee Chairman, along with committee members, Army personnel and Pattaya City Hall Security Officers conducted the inspection which they noted, was met by full cooperation from street vendors and other business operators in the area.

Special attention was given to Soi’s 14, 15 and 16, which offer direct access to Walking Street to emergency vehicles, should the main entrances at the North and South end of the street be blocked for any reason.

There are just too many examples to cite, from vendors, to street entertainers, motorcycle-renters, to illegal parkers, to those above the law parkers, to motorcycle taxi stands (and sits) to beggars, to eating establishment tables, to hello girls, to reserved parking devices. Some of it makes Walking St what it is though, an attraction where 'walking' is nigh impossible.

two to enforce remind tea money​ about the violations on public space with force in a pleasant not too direct manner, of course ...

Theres only one street in Pattaya I can walk on without much problems, and that is walking street.

This is nothing more than realignment of power! As soon as they do this things will get back to the same old same old! It is easy to push for changes on small stuff like sidewalks?

If you were a vendor why would you want to set up on the sidewalk, there is no code requirement as to the width and if there was you would end up in the hospital since you will either break a leg or fall right into a hole.

Tackle this one which have been going on and on for ages! Jetski and all those motorbikes rental on Beach Road that take up all the area! and another the increase in tour buses parked everywhere and anywhere.

I'd be calling it Chinese St from now on , they are only people who go there , thousands off them. They don't even go in the bars just walk up and down and crowd the place up. LK Metro is better no Chinese there , well not yet anyway.

They want to fight the ciriminal syndicates by keeping the walkway free and acessable: well better keep the local officials and police away from this city and all will be cleared up easy as the most criminals are out of the city!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they are going to stamp out crime in Pattaya they will have to close everything down

It's beach road they should look at, how many times do people have to walk out onto the street, into the traffic, to get around the tat in front of the shops. Particularly between Soi 12 to 13/2.

If anything, this just makes the cops look even stupider, as if that were possible.

As if they've never set foot there and finally discovered there is a walking street where prostitution is rife. But they're more concerned with people selling T-shirts and DVDs?

How can the cops think they are being taken seriously?
