Car Crosses Lane and Collides Head-On with Minivan, Injuring 14 in Pathum Thani

A road crash in Pathum Thani has left 14 people injured after a saloon car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a minivan carrying passengers from a temple. Emergency responders had to extricate several victims trapped in the wreckage and rush them to hospital. The crash occurred at approximately 16:30 on 2 February on Phahonyothin-Wat Thua Thong Road, a two-way street in Moo 5, Ban Pathum, Sam Khok district. Police Lieutenant Colonel Woraphak Suphasawat, an investigator from Sam Khok Police Station, was alerted to the incident and promptly arrived at the scene with traffic officers, rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, and local hospital emergency crews. Upon arrival, authorities found multiple injured victims both on the road and trapped inside the vehicles. The minivan, a privately owned Toyota, had sustained severe frontal damage, with the driver and several passengers still inside. Rescue workers used hydraulic cutters to free the trapped victims before transporting them to Sam Khok Hospital, Krung Siam St. Carlos Hospital, and other nearby medical facilities. Nearby, a Toyota saloon car was found crashed into a roadside electricity pole, in a ditch with its front end completely wrecked. The driver was also trapped inside and required extrication before being taken to hospital for treatment. Mr. Samruam, the 63-year-old minivan driver, recounted that he was transporting passengers from Wat Phra Dhammakaya to Wat Thua Thong for a fish-release ceremony when the collision occurred. He stated that the saloon car, travelling at high speed, suddenly veered into his lane and crashed into his vehicle, causing the crash. Authorities have confirmed that a total of 14 people sustained injuries in the crash. All victims have been transported to hospital for medical attention as investigations continue. -- 2025-02-03 -

This case has drawn attention to the ongoing exploitation and trafficking of individuals in Southeast Asia, particularly by criminal groups seeking to profit from illicit online operations targeting unwitting victims worldwide. The joint rescue operation was led by the Royal Thai Army and Royal Thai Police. It followed an alert by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), which warned of several Hong Kong citizens being forcibly employed by Chinese gangs running call centres and online gambling platforms from Myanmar. This particular criminal outfit was believed to be active in an area close to the Thai border in Tak Province, a region notorious as a hotbed for illegal operations. The ONCB had reported that the Hong Kong nationals were seeking to escape and cross into Thailand from the vicinity south of Myawaddy, a strategic location controlled by the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). Myawaddy sits opposite Thailand’s Phop Phra district, an area frequently associated with cross-border criminal activities. Upon receiving critical intelligence from the ONCB, the Thai authorities swiftly moved into action. They enlisted the help of Pol Col Nat Promthep, a police attaché at the Thai Embassy in Rangoon, to coordinate with the DKBA commanders. Thanks to these coordinated efforts and diplomatic engagement with local authorities, the Hong Kong woman was successfully extracted and brought back to safety in Thailand on Sunday. The Thai Army confirmed her well-being and stated that arrangements are being made to facilitate her return to Hong Kong at the earliest opportunity. This operation underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling such transnational crimes and rescuing victims stranded in hostile environments. This rescue sheds light on the persisting, often underreported issue of human trafficking and forced labour in Southeast Asia, where vulnerable individuals are often coerced into working for criminal syndicates. Authorities continue to stress the need for vigilance and stronger law enforcement measures across borders to thwart such criminal enterprises and ensure the safety of citizens across the region.
