Energy Bill in Udon Thani

Featured Replies

Hi, my wife and I are staying in a studio apartment in Udon Thani. I'm just trying to get some feedback about my energy bill for the month, because it seems way too high.

We had to pay 4,000b for our energy after our first month in this place. I don't get it, this seems incredibly high compared to where I've been before and everyone that hears about it seems to agree 4,000b is way too high.

It's a studio apartment. Not big. Rent is 3,500b. So the power bill is more than the rent - which obviously came as a very unpleasant surprise. We're not doing anything out of the ordinary or extravagant with our power usage. We run the AC at all times, but it's not like it's cold or anything. We keep it at a reasonable temperature. Other than that, we don't use the lights that often, and we run a laptop an iPad and 2 cel phones.

So I don't get why it's 4,000b for the energy/power bill. Like I said that's more than the rent costs.

I really am feeling that I am getting f***ed over here, that these people are just giving me the "farang price."

But please give me some feedback on this and let me know how wrong or right this sounds to you. Thanks.

Are you on the Govt rate or has the rate per KW been increased by the landlord, that is usual fair over here when renting some apartments.

Have a word with the owner and even ask your wife I assume she is Thai to speak to a couple of neighbours to confirm how much they are paying.

I'm on the Govt rate and have hit bills over 4000 baht albeit in peak months when consumption is up and is the rate.

Common practice, offer attractive rental price sting em on the electric.

MOVED to Udon forum for local input.

How many units of electric were you charged for? Read the meter today and tomorrow to get an idea of what you use per day. Turn everything off/unplug refrigerator and make sure meter stops turning.

If an old and larger airconditioner it can use a lot of electric when on full time - especially if run at 26 degrees or lower.

But expect it will be a combination of high price per unit and a lot of units.

Thanks guys. Apparently I'm on 7 baht per unit. Didn't realize what I was getting into, because I came from a new BKK condo before this where we were on the govt rate. So I was not hip to this practice. It is an older AC unit also. We are getting out of here asap

Seven baht doesn't sound so bad, but if the room isn't sealed the aircon is (effectively) trying to cool South east Asia.

The usual rent difference in Udon for "krueng ae" versus "pat lom" seemed to be 50-100B per day.

Sorry you lost me on the "kreung ae" vs "pat lom". Can you explain what those are please?

Sorry, my half-assed attempt to render "air conditioning" vs "fan".

Keep jumping to new places until you find an honest landlord(in short supply these days). I've stayed at Thai apartments that charged 7 baht per unit and my energy bill was quite low when I used aircon extensively. If you're paying much more than 1000 a month for general usage you're getting ripped.
