NARATHIWAT: -- A man was shot dead yesterday morning in Narathiwat's Rangae district in an attack police believe may be related to southern unrest.

Following the report of the fatal shooting at about 10am, police found the body of villager Marusaning Binslae, 25, with three gunshot wounds to the head and the torso.

He was lying in a pool of blood next to a road in Ban Batu Buesa Moo 6 in Tambon Bango Sato.

His blue Honda Wave motorbike was toppled over four metres away.

Police collected three gun shells at the scene and sent the body to Ragnae Hospital for the autopsy.

The victim's wife Suwaiba Wahae said she was riding a motorbike to the province's Yi-ngor district for work and her husband was travelling behind her when he was shot dead in an attack launched from the back of a Mitsubishi pick-up truck, which sped away.

She said Marusaning's parents were shot dead in a similar manner.

It is simple but not so simple. One side sees Muslim extremists with guns and bombs as terrorists. The other side sees Muslim extremists as poor, disenfranchised, unemployed people who are simply making social protest with guns and bombs.

If the army lets this continue and try to contain ... nobody pays attention.

If the army gets serious about rounding up these people or killing them in a firefight, well then ... they face the wrath of NGOs and the media.

Marusaning and his parents were shot dead in a similar manner.

There may be some history behind these shootings that's not being published. If it is adverse to the reputation of the military, it won't be revealed.
