Members of new reform committee arrive Parliament House

BANGKOK, 7 October 2015 (NNT) - Members of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSC) have convened at Parliament House for the committee's first meeting.


Among the NRSC members is former Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) member Tawinwadee Burikul, who admitted she did not expect former CDC members to be selected for the job. Dr. Tawinwadee expressed gratitude for her opportunity to be a part of the new reform committee and vowed to use her academic expertise to bring the country’s reform agendas to fruition, especially in terms of fostering economic and social equality.

Also participating in the NRSC is former Secretary-General of the National Security Council Anusith Kunakorn, who revealed he was chosen to fulfill the NRSC’s quota for experts on national security. Mr Anusith said national security is part of the country’s reform agenda. He argued for the restructuring of the country’s security agencies, as well as amendments to security legislation.

Four missing crewmen of Phatra Marine 5 ship found inside engine room

BANGKOK: -- The Phatra Marine 5 container ship that capsized in the Gulf after it was hit by large waves and strong winds from the recent ‘Vamco’ tropical storm was salvaged from seabed with bodies of four missing crewmen inside the engine room.

Police chief says probe into bombings about 90% completed

BANGKOK: -- Police investigation into the bombing incidents at the Erawan Shrine and Sathon pier was about 90 percent completed and the case was expected to be proceeded with the public prosecution soon, said the national police chief, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaichinda, on Wednesday.

National Savings Fund aims towards 3m applicants in 2018

BANGKOK, 7 October 2015 (NNT) – The government’s National Savings Fund has recorded about 300,000 applications, while the fund aims to reach 600,000 applications by years end, according to a report.


The government has issued the latest edition of the Thai Khu Fah publication, reporting on the progress of the National Savings Fund as a pension benefit alternative for freelancers and informal workers.

According to the publication, the National Savings Fund now has about 300,000 members during its first month of application, from people in various occasions from all parts of Thailand such as farmers, merchants, informal employees, and students.

Total deposited money to the fund from current applicants has already been valued at about 300 million baht. The fund is expecting to achieve its 600,000 applicants target by the end of 2015, and to have 3 million members by 2018.

The government is encouraging the general public to apply for this fund at any branch of the Government Savings Bank or Krung Thai Bank, required documents include their identification card with a minimum deposit of 50 baht.

The fund will provide a lifetime monthly post-retirement pension for members, which helps in enhancing each individual’s financial security in the long term.

Phuket bus inferno leaves one dead, 12 injured

PHUKET: -- A 50-year-old Thai woman has died and 12 people have been injured after a bus travelling from Phuket to Satun, on the Malaysian border, caught fire in Phang Nga province, just north of the island, this morning (Oct 7).

NBTC: 4G auctions to conclude within November

BANGKOK, 7 October 2015 (NNT) – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) today celebrates its 4th anniversary, pushing forward the auction of 4G mobile frequencies to accommodate the increasing mobile usage and stimulate the national economy.


The NBTC Chairman ACM Thares Punsri has said in the occasion of NBTC’s 4th anniversary celebration that the NBTC will remain its neutral position for the regulation of broadcasting and telecommunication businesses in Thailand.

He said that the NBTC is now pushing forward the auctions of 4G frequencies for carriers, to ensure confidence and positive benefits from the industrial sector on Thailand's telecommunication business.

In addition, the NBTC Secretary-General Takorn Tantasith has revealed that the auction for the 1800 MHz and 900 MHz frequencies will proceed within the designated time frame, while the auction of the 900 MHz frequency might commence in November in order to allow both auctions to be concluded within November.

He said that these actions will expedite the opening of the 4G service to the public, while consumers will benefit from the adequate frequency spectrum and at cheaper fares.

Ministry of Labour to care for residents affected by haze

BANGKOK, 7 October 2015 (NNT) - Regional Offices of the Ministry of Labour have been instructed to assist southern residents affected by smog as the haze crisis continues to intensify in several provinces.


According to the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, M.L. Boodarik Smithi, the smog density is particularly higher than safety levels in Songklha, Yala and Pattani provinces compared to Phuket and Pattalung even though haze continues to be seen in the two provinces.

Regional labour officials, including those from the Office of Social Security and the Department of Skill Development, will keep residents informed of the haze situation and advise them on how to protect themselves.

Those affected by the haze can exercise their rights to seek medical treatment provided under the social security system, according to the permanent secretary.

12 people attacked by box jellyfish in Koh Samui this year

KOH SAMUI: -- Twelve people have so far been attacked by box jellyfish since this year in Koh Samui alone, including a German tourist who died from the attack after she swam in the sea off Lamai beach Tuesday night.
