The front tires on my pick up are a little worn, when checking to get them replaced the shop says the rear ones also need to be replaced because they are old. With profit being a priority over safety, I'm a little skeptical. The walls on the tread do show a bit of cracking, but there is a heap of tread. I'm not sure exactly how old or how many kms they've done, but this is the second set and the car has done 125,000 kms. Any advice is much appreciated.

I noticed the same problem at 40 000 Km. I found out what aquaplaning means. I swapped the tyres around, you can find out how to do that on the net. I bought the car new and the tyres are just about the cheapest on the market.

Tires go hard after a few years, so it' best to replace them. Hard rubber does not grip well in the dry. Even if there is some tread let it is best to replace them. On my sedans I generally get about 40K kms (and 2-3 years), before I replace them. Pickups seem to go further/longer than this (based on what posters here say), but I'm not sure why. They usually have quite a bit of tread left but they get hard and noisy. You will notice a big difference when you put on a new set. And you should replace all four tires at the same time, and rotate every 10K kms.

I too thought there was lots of tread on the tyres, they were quite

old,one day I was blowing them up and the valve cock just snapped

off ,perished,so the though of that happening at speed made me

buy a new set of tyres, the tyre shop said they were 12 years old !

I don't do much driving, looking at the tread I thought they would be

OK, but you also have to factor in the Sun,which cracks and hardens

them,if in any doubt just buy some new ones, they are not that expensive,

and when your dead you cannot spend it anyway.

Depends what tyres you have and what type of driving you do ? My pick up tyres just got replaced after 4 years and 110,000km. I don't drive like a dick though smile.png

100.ooo miles on 2 bald tires -sounds like a dick, though?

Tempting as it may seem to keep them, the advice is a bit of both....it's sensible and it makes them money. you might be able to get a bit of cash-back on the tyres with tread on them,,,,,I know I have.....

It's also a good idea to start off with a set of 4 tyres fitted at the same time.

I have A pick up truck.35,000 miles. It's going on 10 years old.Still has tread.Hardly ever drive it.Probably won't put new tires on for A couple of years yet.

A lot depends how often and how much you drive the vehicle and how old the tires are.

Mine had heaps of tread left but the rubber was perishing slowly. I figured 5k a year on tyres is a small price to pay for peace of mind..

Those have totally had itlaugh.png

As an Irish friend of mine explained it, 'On a mini the tyres wear out faster because they go further for the same distance.'

For those who don't get it. More revolutions per metre travelled.
