Anyone live in the That Phanom/Nakhon Phanom/Mukdahan area?

I'm a US Peace Corps volunteer living in a rural village in Na Kae for about 7 months now, starting to go a little nuts from the isolation and total lack of contact with fluent English-speakers and/or anyone not of rural Isaan culture, the nearest fellow volunteer being over 2 hours away in another relatively isolated village. I would love to know if there are any other foreigners in the more immediate area, just for a cup of coffee and conversation, or whatever recommendations you might have in the area. Thanks!

Nearest PC volunteer two hours away! My, how times have changed. Back in the early 90s, there used to be PC, UK VSO and Canadian CUSO volunteers all over Isaan in just about every district. Meeting up in a provincial town at w/end was easy and it was hard not to bump into a fellow volunteer at certain cafes or restaurants. Numbers must have been slashed to the bare minimum now if your nearest "neighbour" is that far away. I sympathise with your plight Emily and hope you get a response, as there are now far more farangs in general in Isaan, but mostly they are married or living with their "tee-rak" and maybe not interested in the same stuff as you. But I would have thought there must be a fair few young, single and up-for-a-beer/coffee farang English teachers in towns like Nakhon Phanom or Mukdahan you could link up with fairly easily. Have you tried the Teaching forum or Ajarn.com for leads also? Good luck! wink.png

I am married to a Thai wife and have a house in Nakae in mubaan Nongkokoon (nearby the lake), but I still working and currently in Beijing. (will be back around Christmas for a few weeks) As far as I know there are at least 2 other foreigners living in Nakae, one who runs a little restaurant with his wife on the main road near the market - with the Swiss flag outside and a guy from Belgium who is called Muang as he is living in a new house where purple is the dominating color. Good luck
