Chaiyaphum province prepares for the next drought season

CHAIYAPHUM, 15 October 2015, (NNT) - The northeastern province of Chaiyaphum has been preparing for the upcoming drought.

Chaiyaphum Governor Chusak Treesarn on Wednesday chaired a meeting on next year's dry season with related officials, after finding that the water levels of the province's reservoirs fell to critical lows.

Water at Chulabhorn Dam is at its lowest point in three years, or 46% of total capacity. The dam, which has the province's largest reservoir, has a maximum capacity of 163 million cubic meters.

Governor Chusak instructed district chiefs and village heads to persuade farmers to refrain from off-season farming this year and switch to cultivating drought-resistant crops. He also ordered the provincial waterworks authority office to store water for utility and consumption ahead of the upcoming dry season.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department plans to construct the Prong Khun Phet Reservoir as part of long-term water management. The dam would hold 43 million cubic meters of water. Construction is slated to begin next year and is expected to be completed within six years.
