Wife's sister family TV has broken down.

I love them to death and am giving them the Philips LCD from my little bungalow which TV I haven't used for some time.

It's some years old but still looks good and works well.

It would be just fine for their family.

Yesterday for the first time I noticed some lines on the screen....with the TVOff.

Never seen this before and the TV has not been in the sun though slightly damp atmosphere.

On closer inspection it looks like a surface film has crinkled slightly into lines.

Today we connected the TV and it works fine.

The lines are not so noticeable when TV on and it is usable.

Worst problem is a sort of haze across a bit of the screen.

Am I right in thinking this might be a deteriorated anti glare film and can it be removed and the real screen be cleaned?

Maybe a hair dryer to loosen it up then alcohol to clean the sticky off.

Maybe even a replacement film cut and stuck?

Is this the sort of think TV repair guys do every day for a couple hundred baht?

Here's a pic.

Sorry not great it's already packed in the car.

We had exactly the same issue with an older Tatung TV.

I removed a little of the film. Result - totally white screen where the film was removed, picture returned correctly when the film was re-attached with some sticky tape.

Evidently it's not just an anti-glare film, but possibly a polarising sheet too.

We just used the TV until the picture had deteriorated to the point of being unwatchable then bought a new telly. They are so cheap now it's not worth bothering to try and fix.

Crosby Thanks

Heard to day about this polarising business and hope someone will advise if the elderly Philips will have this or just an anti glare which could be removed/replaced.

Back tot his topic

The previously slightly imperfect film on the screen has come off 20% top corner of the screen and just like Crossy it's white.

Still watchable luckily but still wondering if there's a repair could be done.

Don't have photo but on the right it's almost like the film has shrunk away from the edge.

This would suggest it MIGHT be possible to just peel the rest off and stick new film across the whole screen.

That could be just a few hundred baht, and anyway just hate to throw something fixable away.

Any TV screen experts around right now?

New development!!

We're back up at the sister's where the offending TV is.

They are still using it .

i took a photo and attach.

Again, you can see about 20% of the screen's just white and you can see the thick film is peeling up on the right.

Here's the interesting bit.

I noticed the other day when I had sunglasses on that my iPad wouldn't work.

I thought it was finished.....it was black.

Brain started working.

I turned my sunglasses 90 degrees.....voila! all visible.

So I went and got the sunglasses from the car this evening.

suddenly the white corner of the screen had the channel 3 icon and all the rest in glorious colour.

The family and kids were of course astounded.

ps CrosSy I did in fact ask a tv man about this just recently.

He said it could not be fixed.

However I had told him that the film-free area was black not white.

Ah, the wonders of polarised light :)

Get polarising glasses for all the family, could be cheaper than a new telly.

I'm just one of those guys that likes to see something fixed.

If I could get some of this film I've got a perfectly good 32inch Phillips TV for grandma, whose own TV just shat the bed.

She just loves watching Muay Thai on the weekends.

There are polarising window films, but they're expensive and I've never seen them here (not that I've looked for them).

Get granny some cool polarising glasses :)
