Surin Public Relations Department issues travel safety measures

BANGKOK, 21 October 2015 (NNT) - The Public Relations Department of Surin Province has issued a public service announcement, urging commuters traveling during the end of the Buddhist lent to take short breaks and ensure that their vehicles have adequate airflow.

According to Kanyarat Kiatisupa of the Surin Public Relations Department, the Department of Disease Control in Nakhon Ratchasima Province is expecting heavy use of vehicles during the end of Buddhist lent. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health has cited major factors contributing to read accidents as those consisting of driving under the influence, speeding and failure to wear helmets.

As a precautionary measure, vehicle owners should make sure that their vehicles are in good working condition, with adequate tire pressure and fully functioning lights and turn signals. Drivers must also be well-rested, refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages or medication that may cause drowsiness, as well as abiding by traffic laws.

Another important factor contributing to commuter safety is adequate airflow. Lack of ventilation in vehicle has contributed to an average 1-2 deaths every year. Air-conditioned vehicles that remain parked for a long period of time can accumulate Carbon Monoxide, potentially causing suffocation.

The Public Health Ministry has, therefore, issued additional safety measures for long-distance commuters, consisting of getting adequate rest and taking a break from time time. Should commuters choose to rest inside their vehicles, they should turn off the vehicle’s engine and open the windows. However, if some form of cooling system is desired, commuters should turn on the fan instead of the air conditioner.

Furthermore, should anyone encounter someone in need of assistance, the emergency rescue team can be reached at the Hotline 1669.
