OBEC compensates student for train accident

BANGKOK: -- The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) yesterday paid more than 600,000 baht as well as 7.5% interest as compensation to a student who was crippled after falling out of a running train in 2012.

His left leg was crippled after the incident.

A cash cheque worth 623,300 baht was handed to a secondary 6 (grade 12) student as compensation for injuries sustained while on a school field trip.

The indemnity came about after the boy’s mother filed charges with the Civil Court against the OBEC for compensation after he fell off a train while on a school trip to the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall in Kanchanaburi province in January 6, 2012.

As a result of the fall, the bones in his left were shattered and doctors had to amputate the lower part of the limb.

Originally, the Civil Court motioned that the OBEC would pay an indemnity along with interest of 7.5% per year on the principle amount but charges against the Ministry of Education be lifted.

The student’s mother however, filed an appeal for a higher compensation amount saying that the amount was insufficient.

Three negotiations had to be engaged before an amount was finally agreed upon.

The student’s mother stated that all of the indemnity amount will go towards medical fees revealing that so far, the boy has had 7 artificial limb replacements.
