BANGKOK: -- Provincial Police Region 2 chief Pol Lt-General Thanet Pinmuang-ngam has proposed that Rayong’s Pluak Daeng Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Somchai Sunthornvanich be posthumously promoted to the post of general.

Somchai was shot dead by his subordinate Pol Snr Sgt-Major Chinkrit Putthiprapat on December 15.

Chinkrit, who also shot dead Pol Lieutenant Banyat Somha, who at the time was in Somchai's office, was killed as he tried to flee. The motive of murder was suspected to be Somchai's order to set up a fact-finding panel to investigate a rape allegation filed against Chinkrit by a Laotian woman.

While attending Somchai's bathing rites at Wat Pa Pradu on Tuesday evening, Thanet confirmed that an investigation would be conducted into both the rape allegation and Chinkrit's shooting of the two officers. Police will also investigate the extrajudicial killing of Chinkrit, he added.

If this posthumous promotion will include a sizeable amount of taxpayer expense in payment to surviors, perks present and in the future, or anything other than possible presentation of a framed document / certificate of service and the equalivent of a ''purple heart medal'' I would see no reason to bother.

The rewards that are being handed out to the BIB seems to have gotten out of hand, as they chose the job and risks are part of it.

All he was doing was his job, at his desk, he didn't die a heroic death in battle leading his troops

confronting the enemy, there are many policemen who dies while doing their job, why the lowly police man who dies on

the job not being promoted to a rank of general? and beside, don't they have a rank between Lt. colonel

to a general they can promote him to? what about an honorary rank? if they don't have one, they should invent

one....

I think the promotion is more to do with elevating the widow's pension that is paid out.

Give this deceased a break! he died because he chose to listen and ACT on a Laoasian girl being raped at his Police Station. Many would have brushed it under the carpet and he didn't. We all complain when justice is not served or Police protect Police and here is an example of an officer doing his job and dying for it. Respect and promote him so his family are taken care of.

Agreed. The "doing his job" part is rare enough and the "dying for it" part is not rare enough.

Look at the number of generals in the RTA, compared to a real army. Could probably form a regiment of nothing but generals, with the total combat experience of one British or US private with a single tour of Afghanistan under his belt.

Yes, the poor bugger died doing his job as have a lot of others. I don't have any problem accepting that the family should be very well compensated, but within reason and not needing promotions etc. to bring this about. It should be based solely on the circumstances of the needs of his remaining family, no more no less.

it's perfectly normal in 'death in service' and 'retirement' these are often called 'social promotions' or 'top out' and are recognitions
