Prime Minister Hun Sen’s first state visit to Thailand today and tomorrow will be a milestone in enhancing previously frayed diplomatic relations with Cambodia’s largest neighbor and will also pay off economically, diplomats, executives and analysts say.

“The visit by Prime Minister Hun Sen will make the relationship between our governments much closer as well as our people. As a result, Thai businesspeople and investors will gain more confidence to inject more money into Cambodia,” said Jiranan Wongmungkol, director of the Thai Embassy’s foreign trade promotion office. The embassy has been working closely to arrange the itinerary of the visit, which includes meetings between Mr. Hun Sen and business executives in Bangkok.

The two-day state visit by Mr. Hun Sen marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said. These relations have often been strained, and of late bedeviled by frequent changes of government in Thailand.
