I have to confess I didn't know this.

Today I had a recorded message on my mobile saying that my Sim card would be invalid from tomorrow and I would lose the number permanently. Fortunately, and by chance, I was meeting an old friend in Pattaya for a coffee and he advised me he had received the same message.

To cut a long story short, he took me to the AIS office in Central Festival and they sorted me out with a new Sim card that will be activated on about Wednesday 23rd, but I will be cut off tomorrow for a couple of days.

No great problem but it appears I have an old Sim card (8 years on an old phone - a stone age one but it still works).

Maybe I should have known. I receive loads of messages in Thai from AIS but delete them. I thing it's all to do with upgrade of the system, which is all Greek to me

So, if anyone is cut off tomorrow and do not know why, maybe this will help. Losing an 8 year old number would have caused loads of inconvenience.

Yes they are phasing out the old 2g sims,a friend had the same happen to him.

Expires on the 21st December.

Old numbers can be transferred relatively hassle free at any of the shops.

Thank you for that information. My only (little) gripe is that today 20th, was the first time I had this automated message in English on my phone.

You are the first I have heard of getting the message in English, maybe they had a lot of complaints. I knew about it some time ago as the message was available in English on the website.

If you use AIS you can manage your account here

Click on service and enter your phone number, you will get a text with a OTP to access your account.

I went to the AIS office to see what this was all about. They said I could no longer use my NOKIA dumb phone on top-up account and would have to buy a smart phone. I said nuts! My NOKIA dumb phone now runs on TRUE.

I also have a dumb phone as you call it. The same as the photo and I've had it for 7/8 years.

I guess I was lucky learning about this a day or so before the 'cut off'. I think the difference is that you went after the 21 December because, as I explained, they told me that after 21 Dec my dumb phone would not work anymore on the sim card and I would lose the number for ever.

Glad you took a strong line with them and got fixed up.

By switching to another provider one would be getting a new number ,right? Or is the old number "portable"?

I would not want a new number.

Cheers.

You could probably request your number be 'ported', but given the drop dead deadline I wonder if they could accomplish it in time.

The number could probably only be retained if you allowed them to move it to a new SIM running on one of the same network's 3G/4G subsidiaries. You'd still be able to 'port' it to another network later, but only after a certain time has elapsed.
