ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, June 17 (UPI) -- Some 5,000 Philippine soldiers have been deployed to the southern province of Sulu to track down the Islamist militant group Abu Sayyaf that beheaded two Canadian hostages and is threatening two others.

At least 10 military battalions from the Philippine marines, army, air force and navy are converging on Sulu from land, sea and air, Maj. Filemon Tan Jr., spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command, said. Tan said the operation is not considered "wide scale" but will focus on areas known to back, the Islamic State-linked Abu Sayyaf.

"We focus on areas known to be supportive of the Abu Sayyaf group. We will go to the communities known to provide refuge to bandits," he said. "There are selected target areas. These bandits have relatives and they hide in the populace."

*** To add to the reason why its dangerous there if you visit Manila you will see armed guards at McDonald's , Burger King and Malls with shotguns or automatic weapons. ***

You people must visit a different Philippines to me as I lived in Cebu and never had any problems or felt unsafe anywhere in Cebu.My buddy was a DJ and we used to fly up to Manila to party all weekend in Manila and we had a fantastic time, nothing but fun met great people local and foreigners and never felt unsafe in Manila for even a second either!.

I honestly don't understand what you people must do to attract such attention from bad people or to feel unsafe it just does not compute with me at all?I've travelled all over the Phils to many islands like Bohol,Bantayan,Malapascua,Camotes,Cabilao,I've done Clark and Angeles City in Pampanga also and had an absolutely fantastic time and anyone that doesn't really does have something wrong with them.

In fact I don't believe these people have even been there,it's just scaremongering nonsense!

Do u travel alone or with a bunch of local? Do u have private transport waiting for u? Do u stay within makati? It's makati not makati city. Have u Try walking alone at night from ayala ave to burgos st. ? Have u try walking around chinatown or 168 etc. Try it. Try walking from. La cafe (old) name up and down the street. Try walking from la cafe to makati. It's a long walk. Yry b4 u defend the unknown

To the Bronx Bar one of the few still open on Burgos Street at around 5-6:00am and guess what...we had a wonderful time,no problems,no attacks, nothing!

Because you are native Phillippino YOU will have no problems going around areas or taking foreign friends around but foreigners may have problems. Thailand has 65 million people---Phill has 100 million. Beaches are even nicer in Phill but Thailand gets almost 30 million tourists a year---the Phillippeans less than 5 million. Why ? People don't want to visit poor dirty looking country where they may be kidnapped and they see armed guards at McDonald's ,banks , malls and many other places. Do you see that in Thailand, Vietnam or Laos? And you know that the country sends their Dr's nurses, school teachers ect overseas to make money to send home because of the poor conditions in Phill.

U are wrong again. There are many things i like about Philippines, just safety is not one of them. Its terribly unsafe. If i have a private transport fetching everywhere, with local escort, its a fun place.

13 Indonesian sailors abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists

MANILA: -- Thirteen Indonesian sailors have been abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf militants from their tugboat off the southern Philippine province of Tawi-Tawi two weeks after four Malaysian hostages were released for ransom, The Manila Times Onlinereported on Thursday.

Indonesia media reported that the boat captain of the tugboat Charles 00 phoned his wife and told her that gunmen who introduced themselves as Abu Sayyaf intercepted them at sea on Wednesday then demanded 20 million ringgits for their safe release.

Both the abductors and their hostages were last seen heading toward Tawi-Tawi, one of the five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.

Freed hostage recounts boyfriend's beheading by Philippine militants Ayee Macaraig,AFP 1 hour 26 minutes ago

A Filipina hostage released by southern Philippine militants on Friday broke down in tears as she recounted how her Canadian boyfriend had been beheaded a week earlier.

Marites Flor was abducted in September by Abu Sayyaf militants, along with three others, two of whom -- Flor's partner Robert Hall and fellow Canadian John Ridsdel -- were killed.

Flor cried as she recounted how the kidnappers led away Hall to be beheaded after a ransom deadline lapsed last week. Ridsdel had been killed in April.

The Norwegian hostage is the only one left , the family try to raise money to release him , since the Norwegian government will not pay anything.

So I think they will kill him if they do not receive any money soon.

LOL. And that doesn't happen in the Philippines?

SOMEbody needs to "quit being so ridiculous"...

The OBVIOUS bottom line here is that BOTH places can be dangerous for tourists.

You can use public transport in Southern Thailand as a foreigner (looking white) and have no problems. You can't do that west of Zamboanga. The authorities will stop you from doing so.

PLUS you better dont do it south of a line Molave - Sindangan. Even Pagadian is bad.

Unfortunately, the entire Rio Grande area also needs to be added to that list plus the area south of the Isulan - Cotabato highway.

That covers a pretty nasty and extensive stretch of land.

Worse: As the Davao attacks showed - the list is incomplete and raids go far beyond.

No idea if there is a statistics on chopped of white heads Thailand vs Phils. or, being more positive: white foreigners dies in captivity; or, just held hostage and released after paying some minor sums.

Comparing Manila with BKK: You wont get robbed in Central BKK, be it by criminals in or without uniform.

Kidnapping foreign business in Pampanga and surroundings (mostly Koreans) is a favorite past-time of filipino criminals. How many foreign businessmen have been kidnapped or their families shot in Thailand?

Finally, Duterte makes the Thai junta look like Sunday school boys.

The Philippines are pretty lawless, thoroughly corrupt, and health-wise an epic mess. That does not mean that are not livable spots and nice people. The overall picture is, however, the view down an unflushed toilet.

Taken this together it is non-sense that Thailand is more dangerous.

I have not been to Manila but I have been to, Cebu, Bohol, Panglao. After hearing stories like you describe I feared for the worst but it was a great trip, no issues with taxis, they even spoke Engkish. I even walked to the mall near my hotel after dark in Cebu. Nothing bad happened I spent 3 weeks. Yes I did see armed guards at Starbucks and shopping malls, I saw a lot more poverty then Thailand.

I will say that I felt less safe then in Thailand, maybe because of all the bad stuff I heard, maybe seeing all the armed guards but I am going back for a month stoping in Manila just for a few days My advise skip Manila your first time as I did If you go to the Philippines and skip Manila and use street smarts I am sure you will report back lving your trip. I will report about my first stay in in Manila as well. :)

I can GUARANTEE you that all the people commenting on here, saying the Philippines is unsafe have NEVER been there and thankfully, never will! rolleyes.gif

Cebu and Manila are not so different, they are the first and second largest cities in the Philippines after all Manila is much, much bigger and more overcrowded but it puts Bangkok to shame for shopping in Makati and restaurants also.

Try the People's Palace for Thai food it's a great place an right in the centre of Makati and the shopping, bars, restaurants etc. :

That's an unfair and sweeping statement. I started the thread by stating about a friend who had returned from there and gave his assessment on the place and he is well travelled around Asia.

We have heard from guys who have lived there for substantial amounts of time and some who have Filipina wives. You cannot say they are all wrong just because their experiences and knowledge differs from yours.

Absolute nonsense,

I merely stated observations made by a friend who had been as I had been contemplating on visiting the place until I started reading and hearing the horror stories. I then sought advice from people who have been, lived there, visited long and short term to gain knowledge and get their views.

That is the idea of a public forum, to exchange views and find out the good, the bad and the ugly. I certainly have made no judgement or degenerated anybody and stated from the outset I had never been.

You need to read the post fully before making accusations like that and then read the responses from TV members. You seem to have a problem with any person whose views differ from yours.

No I have a problem with people denigrating the Philippines that have never been there, like you,as I have lived and worked there and know the truth. If you are trapped in Thailand like so many here desperately trying to convince yourself that putting all your assets in your Thai wife's/girlfriend's name was a wise move then you're in denial,if not I don't understand what your motivation is?

The Philippines are beautiful islands with some of the most pristine beaches in the World and some of the friendliest people in the World to boot,if you don't want to go there that is just fine but why are you trying to convince other people not to go there. When Thailand is clearly less welcoming to foreigners and far,far more violent with many more unexplained tourist deaths on a daily basis?

The same can be said of Vietnam,Cambodia,Laos,Myanmar,Indonesia,Malaysia,Singapore etc. with regards to tourist deaths, unexplained or otherwise these are the indisputable facts!

So according to you there are no unexplained tourist deaths in the Phillippines ? You can hire hit men there to kill someone for 10000 pesos! Life is cheap there.

I can find lots of articles about tourist/expat deaths in the Phills , anytime.

List of foreigners killed in the Philippines in the past 10 years (August 18, 2013)

The list is only a sample of the foreigner murders or acts of terrorism committed there the last decade. Many more are committed and not reported in the regional or national news, case in point, look at the State Department cases - Unnamed American on my list at the bottom.

Hawker, thanks for confirming my assumption. You dont have better data at hand. So why are other statements more laughable than you own? Yup nice try and even nicer score ;)

Anyhow, I think we agree that the Phils are relatively more dangerous than Thailand while Thailand has more victims in absolute numbers.

His statements dovetail with my experiences. I live in Thailand and work in Manila.

Fort bonifacio is as safe and sterile as singapore, Forbes is hundred year old trees and mansions .

Head through the golf course to the outskirts of makati and things can get real pretty quick. Certain areas of metro Manila make klong toey look like a country club.

The Philippines has a far more extreme range of conditions from wealthy and very beautiful gated communities to the direst of slums often separated by a street or a 5 meter wall.

And yes violence against foreigners may well be higher - as you said the ratios are higher- the Phil's wins hands down in degree of violence against foreigners as well as but just plain violence against their own.

when I was still with my now-ex pilipina missus, we were staying on family land outside Cavite.

We (I) noticed many events going on all the time around us...

Even the old bag was starting to get scared, when a whitey down the street was murdered whilst out on his farm property.

The killers took all his property (including the house etc that is) Eventually his missus was taken down too, when she was implicated in the affair

I checked that listing earlier in this Thread.

Still sweating how close I had become to being on that list back 1995 era.

My then-fiancee's ex-common law hubby had sneaked into our Engagement/her birthday party on the beach.

(I later found out how nasty the back ground of my threat, that no one including my then fiancee warned me of his presence)

He was pretending to be a 'cousin'

While drinking in a big tent, separate from all the women folk, this dude JoJo C***, a worker at Ternate Resort (who I also found out later was an earlier convicted killer) , tried to buddy up and amid the drinking, tried to coax me onto a long boat down by the waterside, as he wanted to take me out, just him and me, out onto the bay

when I declined the offer he then vanished back into the crowd and apparently left...

Months later, after married, and then the soon-after separation, I come across some photos.

It was him! the ex's ex common law hubby, in OUR room, both in their undies.

My last words to her were my thoughts and realisations on what had earlier transpired (on the beach), and she admitted something bad was planned, though denied being part of it.

Anyhow, I am a cool kat, and didn't rip her head off, instead ensured she got back on the plane that was due to leave for Singapore then PhiloLand

good riddance

they deserved each other

That 126 people I counted IN TEN YEARS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! facepalm.gif

Pick any SINGLE Western country and I guarantee you that there are HUNDREDS of their tourists murdered or dying unexplained deaths in JUST ONE YEAR in Thailand! bah.gif

Let's take Australia for example,Thailand is the NUMBER ONE destination in the WORLD for their nationals to die while on holiday, these are FACTS not nonsense hearsay like half of this thread! rolleyes.gif

Hawker, thanks for confirming my assumption. You dont have better data at hand. So why are other statements more laughable than you own? Yup nice try and even nicer score wink.png

You live in Thailand but work in Manila? Can I ask what you do and what visa you have to duck in an out of Thailand so often,I've never heard of anyone doing this before?
