I am not sure if this is the right place to post but ist is IT related. Recently i thought i had a problem with my eyes. But on second thought it appeared a lot of major websites (like BBC and CNN are more asnd more starting using light grey characters for more bling bling. Unbelievable and stupid as b/w is the best readable. Maybe itb is just my age but wherre will it end, light yellow on a white background?

Just had a quick look at .bbc.com and as an example browsed to:

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/35229750

I would not say it is particularly bad to read.

It is black on white script (headline black on yellow, very good to read).

All can as usual be enlarged by browser settings.

The edit note of Rimmer in the OP raises suspicion that you have a problem with your device (PC? Laptop? Smartphone?) or the browser.

Provide links or screenshot else you won't get much feedback.

Have you tried adjusting your monitor settings? Often the problem is out of whack contrast and brightness settings. If you have problems reading the page in the BBC link above, then it's either your monitor or your eyes, not the website.

KhunBenQ. I admit my 17" screen is not the best and.that BBC page is ok to read. But have a look at this CNN page: http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/13/politics/iran-us-sailors/index.html. Look at the small grey fonts under the small video windows. And the main BBC site at: http://www.bbc.com/news.

Now even Google give its search results in grey fonts, so i must use "ctr +" more and more.

Maybe it is time for me to visit the optician.

given that my eyes arent great and the captions in the example you posted are clear as day, i would suggest an opticians visit should be a part of your future.

I agree that in the CNN site this style of "dimming" the non active videos is somewhat useless.

If you hover with the mouse over the description it gets red on white.

If you hover over the thumbnails it gets black on white.

Disputable.

BBC: the headlines are OK.

Sure the grey on white is not easy.

Is it your eyes or it might be your monitor settings (contrast/brightness) and the lights in your room.

There are tons of screen test/calibration pictures/programs out there.

E.g. click here:

http://www.stoletje.com/monitor/color.gif

I see 20 scales of grey (black to white) in the first row.

What do you see?

Well, as written: these CNN "dimmed" entries are indeed a bit on the edge.

But if you have problems with the BBC news portal then an eye-test is due.

15 inch monitor, high pixel resolution (?) resulting in a close viewing distance will uncover eye problems without mercy (farsightedness?).

If I take off my glasses I can read simply nothing on my screen (80 cm distance or so) while the TV screen (2 m) is (just about) OK.

If you are using a 17" monitor, then how old is it? If it is years old then could be the monitor, they don't go on forever.

Can you borrow another monitor to compare?

A reasonable new 23" monitor sells for around 5000 baht, cheaper ones available also.

Just make sure the inputs are right if you have an older computer.

All the links above are clear to me and I also don't have the greatest of vision.

As you get older it's recommended to have your eyes checked annually by an optometrist anyway (not some shop selling glasses).

If your laptop has HDMi plug it into your TV and see if it is any better.

Have a old Laptop, and with with the old type connection, cannot read on laptop but fine on the 42" TV in bedroom...

My main Monitor is 32" TV via HDMi from PC, [bought it for this perpose] could never go back to a smaller screen, been using this for about 3 years
