BANGKOK: The Ministry of Tourism and Sports today announced a big project to build cable cars for tourists who want to go up the mountain on Phu Kradueng National Park, a popular attraction for Thais to visit in winter.

Deputy Prime Minister Thanasak Patimapragorn said he believes the cable cars will bring more visitors, resulting in more revenue and employment for the Loei province.

Currently, cars are not allowed on the hiking track. In order to enjoy the scenery on the mountain, visitors must hike for an approximate 5.5 kilometers.

They've been proposing this for some years now, it would be a good thing for Phu Kradung, it's quite a trek to the top and many are unable to make it, there is no way of getting to the top other than by foot, of course ThaiVisa members will pour the usual scorn on anything the Thai's propose.

Phu Kradung gets busy in the cool season and New Year it's very busy, but it's mainly young people who are fit enough to make it to the top, hence the cable car proposal.

Are you crazy? I is a national park. People go for the natural beauty. If you want a fairground ride go to a fair ground. It appears you are too lazy to walk so here is some advice for you.........dont go there

And these proposals have forever been opposed by environmentalists, not the small gaggle of local Thais who will undoubtedly find every which way to exploit and monetise this. Pit stops/food carts/tuk tuk stops/littering and we won't go to who in their right minds would board this Thai built enterprise. Why, they even had to close down the bungee jump on Phuket, Christ knows how they'll manage a cable car ermm.gif

Good points. " ThaiVisa members will pour the usual scorn on anything the Thai's propose" seems to detract from the otherwise positive note.

"Live and Let Live".

Terrible, terrible idea.

I've been there twice. A moderate climb that only gets steep in the last short stretch.

A beautiful, serene place that shouldn't get spoiled by massive herds of pathetic fatties in cable cars. Overcrowding, excessive construction and garbage will ruin this national park too. Let the whingers stick to their airconditioned shopping malls.

Construction, safety and maintenance issues aside, this is a great idea for tourism.

There are many existing cable car rides around the world that can be used as a template for Thailand:

Tiamen Shan Mountain, China Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Hua Shan Mountain, China Ba Na Mountain, Vietnam

Ngong Ping, Hong Kong Bob’s Peak, New Zealand

El Alto Mountain, Bolivia Sugarloaf Mountain, Brazil

Pico Espejo, Venezuela Table Mountain, So. Africa

Stanserhorn Mountain, Switzerland Sulphur Mountain, Canada

Klein Matterhorn, Switzerland Grouse Mountain, Canada

Cable car rides might also be an alternative to car traffic through various popular Thai animal reserves such as elephants. And the opportunity to double or triple charge foreigners is unlimited. wai2.gif

I live in Phu Kradung, and have been to the top for the last 10 years at New Year time, so take your foot outta your mouth and learn from this disaster.

It's aimed at those that can't manage the arduous trek to the top. not young strapping lads like you.
