Yesterday I drove from my home at Nongkwai up the Canal Road and into Wing 41 to pick up my private road sticker. Bearing in mind recent adverse publicity about accidents and statistics, yesterday felt completely surreal as within my twenty minute run from the Mae Hia traffic lights to the Wing 41 office, I saw no less than four accidents, three involving motorcycles!

The first was at the Mae Hia traffic light where a pickup had slammed straight into the back of a much smaller car, Mazda 2 or similar, at great speed judging from the huge mess of metal on the back end of the little car. About two kilometres further up the canal road there was an ambulance, a police presence, and two mangled motorcycles. About three kilometres further on, there was a big crowd standing staring into the canal, with a flashing light ambulance there. I didnt stop but could see a motorcycle crashed down by the water. Then when I arrived at the office to pick up my wing 41 sticker, the main pull in was blocked off because a motorcycle and a car had collided right by the car park entrance!

I accept so many accidents in such a short time is very unusual, even for here, but in the UK where I come from you would drive for a whole year and probably not see four accidents just having happened! I have nothing more to offer other than the usual pity and sadness for the stupidity and brainlessness of many drivers here.

More and more crazy drivers on the road.

This morning i almost hit a cyclist just crossing the road at Thapae gate without looking to his right or left.

People are not aware of the dangers they putting themselves and others in lately.

Goes hand in glove with those days you can't wait to get home due to a few near misses....

Most days - nothing - some days = time to get home.....

And people wonder why I don't drive here. Everything I need is within talking or songthaew distance.

Believe me, you get used to it :)....

I'm more worried what will happen back in Germany in May ... 555

Must have been the Chinese, Thai not do dat.

Do us all a favour and give up that old and pathetically worn out cliche. Its never was funny or witty and is now just pathetic

Perhaps you missed the recent Thai pots calling the Chinese kettles black.

Either way, I don't really give a toss what you think about it.

Thrilling accident reports and Thai bashing.

.... puts more credibility to the saying..... "its the truth that hurts"

Yes it is painful to live in a land I love and have to listen to the Thai bashing.

Particularly when it is from people who choose to live in it.

Reminds me of the guy hitting himself on the head with a hammer and wondering why his head hurts.

Here we go, the usual bullies kick into action! This thread is not in any way about "Thai bashing" its about the great regret and sadness and frustration I feel for a Nation I also love ( thats why I live here) because sadly as time goes on, the driving standards seem to be getting worse not better. Better, faster, sleeker vehicles on two wheels and four now available in much greater numbers, but is there any sign of an equivalent learning process in the road awareness and driving capacities of the population at large? No there isnt. If anything its getting worse.

Thats the issue, a care and a compassion and a frustration and really wanting someone out there to really start addressing the massive issues of road safety.

Of course, it is not only Thais that are accidents waiting to happen. I had a couple of western girls on a motorcycle shoot across the carriageway in front of me and when I drew alongside, they were laughing about it and gesticulating wildly. There is a severe lack of awareness in the young - probably something to do with the absolute need for the 'fun-buzz' that seems to over-rule all else in so-called "modern life" and the ever-increasing detachment from considering the harsh realities of nature and the laws of physics, assuming they even understand the basics......

The Canal Rd claimed yet another victim this morning.Came out of Rimping, next to Mae Hia market at around 9-30 and at least 100 people milling round. Looked like a motor bike had come across the narrow road crossing the canal and got cleaned up. 2 vehicles involved as well.Didn't look good at all.

People who live around this part of the world would know that the Mae Hia Market entry and exit, onto Canal Rd, is an accident waiting to happen and it did today and not for the first time.

Not sure if I am correct but seems people have a mindset that just will not slow down at these bottlenecks and driving behaviour appears to be getting worse.

Hang Dong Rd is no better.

Absolutely agree, that whole area where Mae Hia Market is is crazy dangerous all of the time. You have vehicles reversing out from near the market onto Canal Road, then you have vehicles straddling across both lanes wanting to uturn just by Rimping, then you have vehicles heading down canal road with no intention of slowing down...its complete stupidity and madness, a perfect example of Thai driving at its very worst.

Its the last time I will park in front of the Bangkok Bank, near Rimping and back out. There are 2 entry/exits at the back and side of the market car park, better option.
