A couple of questions about the town of Prachuap Khiri Khan:

Are there any supermarkets there? What about 7Eleven shops?

Is it possible to book a car from a Bangkok travel agency in order to go there? How much would it cost and how long would it take?

Thanks!

It's a few years since I've been there. I can't say if there is a Tesco or Big C there now, but yes there were a few supermarkets, just not the Big Names. It's a proper town, so there is a sizable fresh/wet market. If driving down there is a Big C on the southern end of Petchaburi, right on the highway.

Where in Thailand are there NOT 7-11 stores? smile.png

No supermarkets or 7/11 stores. You have to leave your car on the highway and travel in by water buffalo.

Some stalls in the market except cash but most are into trinkets and mirrors.

the town is locked at a night gates close 5pm payment for water buffalo parking is with trinkets or mirrors

Thanks, bendejo. I have only been as far as Hua Hin (in that region, I mean), and I remember there was no proper supermarket there... admittedly that was back in 2004. Perhaps things have changed since.

Supermarkets that are out of town are useless for me, since I don't drive.

Thanks again. Tesco is good news, though I prefer Tops..... I wish I could take the train and enjoy the scenery, but I'll probably be coming with someone who is very old and in a wheelchair... which brings me to my second question (which nobody answered): is it possible to book a car through a travel agency in Bangkok all the way to Prachuap Khiri Khan? If so, approximately how much would it cost and how many hours would the journey take?

Many thanks.

BKK airport to PKK is 316 km. google maps says 3.75 hrs but i don't think that is possible. but up to 5 hours depending on traffic.

yes can book taxi or mini van. i don't have company name sorry.

Taxi BBK to HH 1800-2500 baht.

HH to PKK is 90 more kilometers. so 3000-3500 baht?

It would depend on a number of factors

  • whereabouts in Bangkok you are
  • the traffic
  • the number of stops you make
  • the speed you drive
  • your ability to read a map

Taxi to PKK costs 3500

Private Minivan will be a bit more but for 2 pax no real need unless you bringing the kitchen sink (kitchen sinks are available in Homepro in PKK)

Travel agents can arrange both taxis minivans or private cars

From BKK to PKK work on 5 hours travel time

PKK must be the quietest Provincial Capital in Thailand.

I am down here now on my second month long holiday in 2 years.

Good local restaurants and scenery.

Coming from Chiang Mai I love the sea breeze and am amazed at the lack of security at Wing 5, just drive in, Wing 41 in CM would have a heart attack.

Very poor for Western shopping, the Tesco is badly stocked for snack type foods.

I had a morning out to Hua Hin last week, Villa Market trip was a must.

No Western style nightlife.

Nice place, minimal traffic and typical Friendly Thai people.

Pin anuson x 1

Opp. land office x1

PTT servos x 1 at each.

Not on drugs, just not had a rum for a few days, not quite up to my normal standard.

Thanks again to all of you.

We won't be bringing the kitchen sink, but we'll be bringing a wheelchair...

5 hours is quite a long trip. Is it worth flying into Chumphon? I have seen this option on the Internet, but I understand that the trip from Chumphon to PKK is also rather long....

This is a pretty good estimate. Two weeks ago, my wife booked a taxi from Nakhonchai Air to take me from Rangsit to a place about 25 kms south of PKK. The fee was 20 baht for the pick-up and 10 baht per kilometre, so I paid just under 3,500 baht.

NCC1701A is also right about the time. There is a fair amount of road reconstruction taking place, so you definitely don't want to travel at the weekend.

BKK airport to PKK is 316 km. 5 hours

the distance between Chumphon and PKK is 189 km. 2 hours

So 127 less kilometers. A taxi traveling at 100-120 KPH would take 90 mins to two hours depending on traffic.

5 hours one way, 2 hours the other, plus flight time.

so how much time would you save factoring in waiting at a airport? loading onto a plane with wheelchair? taxi at arrival?
