BANGKOK:-- A series of dramatic police stings north of Bangkok led to several drug arrests but the leader of a big gang managed to flee in handcuffs.

Gang leader Pornchai Khamsot, 42, of Ubon had earlier offered police a million baht in exchange for the freedom of his right hand man. Police arrested him but as the investigation widened he slipped through their fingers in Saraburi, reports Thairath.

The governor of Ayutthaya and top brass from the local police announced the arrest of three people and a large cache of money, drugs and other evidence on Thursday.

Paraded for the press were Anusa (Oot) Jankhamma, 38, of Nakorn Nayok, Miss Rattanawalee Rojananon, 29, of Ang Thong and Anusorn (Dong) Thipphiman,32, of Saraburi along with five vehicles, a million baht in cash, 1.7 million in a bank account, a 13 baht weight gold necklace, 1.2 kilos of ice (amphetamines), 6 kilos of heroin and 96,800 Ya Ba tablets.

Along with Pornchai also on the run is Nattawut (Lek) Cheunta, 26, of Saraburi.

Two days of drama for Wang Noi police investigators north of Bangkok had begun with the arrest of Anusa in Saraburi along with a large amount of drugs. He told police that he was employed by Pornchai to look after the merchandise.

Discovering that his right hand man had been arrested Pornchai called police to offer them a million baht in cash to let him go. Police went along with the plan first arranging to meet him at a market and then changing the rendezvous to a PTT gas station at kilometer 78 on the main road into Bangkok.

Pornchai arrived as scheduled with his girlfriend Rattanawalee but the pair were apprehended along with the million baht. Other drugs were found hidden in another location as the investigation widened.

Pornchai, now in custody, said that another gang member, Anusorn, had more drugs so a further sting was set up in Saraburi. At the allotted time Anusorn arrived with Nattawut on a motor bike with some Ya Ba and the heroin in 20 compressed packs.

But realising they had been set up a fight broke out with arresting officers and in the confusion both Nattawut and Pornchai, still in handcuffs, managed to escape into the night.

Surrounded by cops at an out of the way PTT station but are still able to escape easily? Yes I believe that!

Stage managed .......................all just for show and the results well scripted but with a sprinkling of drama to provide the temporary illusion of reality.

Country controlled by the money men at the very top who use their Mafia network to remain in power whilst the head puppet goes through the motions with a lot of huffing and puffing................. and endless twaddle press releases from him and a network of various village idiots squatting in government buildings.

Great country though!!

Red faces all round.

Can Thai police look sheepish? If they could then there would have been a few sheepish looks after that.

But I imagine it was all "what will be will be" and nobody thought they needed to be embarrassed!

My good friend Gerry, a former NY city detective, used to say that crimes are not solved because police are smart, but because many criminals are stupid.

I guess he never considered the possibility of a police force that's even stupider than the criminals.

Seeing as how money is handed out for good police work maybe there should be a policy where money is extracted from the cops paycheck when he screws up. Just a suggestion.

It wouldn't amount to a tenth of the money they presumably make while letting the Mr bigs <ahem> "escape" each time!

What a stuff up. Here we have the two most important crims in the bust giving the plods the slip even while they are in handcuffs. In another story we have The Deputy Prime Minister telling anyone who can be bothered listening what a wonderful job the police are doing. I so much enjoy reading these stories. Only the Thai bureaucracy could create such slapstick humour and daily entertainment.
