Ours broke so looking to get another and was wondering what is the difference between a PSI box which seem popular and all those on the shelves in tesco and Big C? They are all about the same price so what's best assuming they all have HDMI connections?

If you are looking at the lot at the supermarket, I believe those are DVB2 boxes.. meaning you would only get your FOTA TV stations like Channel 3 plus the loads of new digital channel..

I never used a PSI box before.. so maybe a PSI box offers you more channel than those?

What type of box are you asking about? There are C and Ku band (most cover both) used with satellite antennas for direct reception of several hundred stations (PSI is best known for this but GMMZ and True also has a full line of receivers and AJ and others are available in stores - then will have LNB input marked on back. Currently on believe only True and CTH offer pay channels directly - others may offer on Ku band at extra cost.

Then there are the converters for digital TV channels (about 36 of them if within range) which new TV sets will have built in.

Then there are the extra Android type box to watch internet TV - making non-smart TV have the smart functions.

Strewth all a bit confusing, I looked at the PSI site and they seem to do all the Thai channels we watch so probably go with them, the others seem to offer less then.

But if a normal PSI box you will need to have either a Ku or C-band antenna connected to it - I currently have PSI on several sets using C-band antenna and excellent reception of about 200 channels.

ours looks like the one on the right so guessing PSI might work, idea sat box and dish came with the new house

Suspect that is the mesh C-band antenna (they above each other on my screen). In that case you will have access to all the free channels and it is currently several hundred using the PSI receivers - but will not have access to pay channels (which you probably don't want anyhow). So just connecting that box to power - input from antenna - HDMI to TV. Will have to go through about a 4 minute auto tune first time (and occasionally later when they change channel lineup). The big advantage of the PSI type box is that is auto tunes and should set up everything without any help required (except perhaps change language).
