Hi all,

Anybody know the relative 'privacy' of the main messaging services? Currently using Line but am guessing that may not be too smart if I am expressing myself freely!

Apple's IM?, whatsapp etc?

I haven't followed these technologies - if anybody who knows what's what can recommend me the best way to have a personal private chat without any chance of being listened into by bigbrother I'd be very grateful.

cheers

LINE has recently gone for end to end encryption so in theory it should be ok. Viber also has end to end encryption no. Both of these apps have to be the test version for you t have it though.

Whatsapp now encrypts end to end.

I wouldn't use Line because of its population of childish, emoji-obsessed Asians.

"CYPHR", "SIGNAL" "GLYPH" and "WICKR" are four of many Android/IOS apps that advertise themselves as encrypted and super secure. Wickr has a feature that automatically deletes messages after a set time. Whether these and others are any more secure than WhatsAp, Line, ect is arguable but the fact they have a lot fewer users certainly makes them a less attractive target for hackers. Like most messaging apps, both ends of the conversation must have the app downloaded.

But LINE is where all my Thai friends are. What's the point of a messaging app if no one you know is on it?

Absolutely correct. The content may take a little bit of work to decrypt, but the messages are recorded and stored (and can therefore be retrieved). Included in that is the IP address and MAC codes of those communicating - using a VPN does not make any difference (just makes it a little harder).

But would 'they' really want to go through all the trouble of getting that? Only if they had a serious reason - so what are you talking about? For them to find out what you are saying/doing, it would be like scrolling through all the CCTV coverage in Thailand, just to see if anyone did something wrong. No - the reality is 'they' only bother to go through all the trouble if something happens in a specific location, or they want to check you out because of some specific incident/issue.

Dont discuss bomb making techniques, or things like joining ISIS, or leak classified documents, and dont defame people (or break any other Laws), and there is nothing to worry about. Demanding (or expecting) privacy while using the internet, is like demanding (expecting) people not to look at you while you walk through a crowded marketplace, or expect not to be filmed while you are at the airport.

No, it's just based on having Line and getting pi$$ed off with childish emoji-obsessed Asians.

Removed it and deleted my account a long time ago.

Ah - I see. You needed to make it 'private' - before connecting to a network. I found the same with all of these 'social media' apps - they want to help you run your life (for advertising reasons of course). I found a get around is to download and then install with no network - and set configuration before connecting to a network.

Plus - my Thai wife loves Line and so therefore I use it - she is my only contact. And I got used to the emojii - saves having to type anything :)
