Maybe Thailand 4.0 is really a rebranded Thailand Firewall the govt was pushing for earlier (and maybe still is); however, the Firewall name hit everyone's nerves and turned into a political hot potato.

This would appear to be the exact opposite of the PM's self sufficient economy that he so proudly presented to world leaders.

And the world leaders are still laughing!

Thailand 4.0 has noble ambitions. Summarised in Deputy Commerce Minister Suwit's own words

1. Change production of "commodities" into "innovative products".

2. Transform industry-driven activities into those driven by technology, creativity and innovation.

3. Shift from the focus on making products, to providing services.

Achieving the above three objectives is the easy bit even allowing for the poor productivity of Thai workers. I suspect the hard bit is, according to the Prime Minister, to make it all happen is to "....end corruption to allow for the transparency and good governance needed to have a digital society".

So Thais can expect that Thailand 4.0 will be a raging success now that corruption is about to end.

I have spoken with Alice and the Mad Hatter about this today and they both agrees that in this new Wonderland everything will be beautiful.

good luck, ever turn i attempt to do something like this is blocked by a greedy thai. Hope he understands that WITHOUT TRANSPARENCY there will never be thailand 1.0... how the hell is he going to get it to 4.0?

data isnt secure here.

thais, like chinese, are "special". cooperation is only achieved through bribery.

THERE IS NO THAI COMPANY QUALIFIED TO DO THIS.

I will suggest that if the government FAILS to do its JOB, Corporations should be allowed to take over the project. I would love to take the "one tablet per child scheme" and fix it. because i can. and cost less than 7000b per child. ... much better than the BILLIONS WASTED ON CHINESE FAMILY FRIENDS COMPANIES WITH NOTHING TO SHOW!!! WHY HAVE THEY NOT GONE TO JAIL?????

These are all motherhood statements that lack detail and credibility.

It's little more than a sequence of sound-bites, they were delivered to create the impression of a dynamic Thailand driving through innovative change. Which every Thai-watcher I know recognises as complete hokum from a government that specialises in complete hokum.

Don't get me wrong, all of this is possible, but not by a bunch of armed thugs with big boots and odd-looking hats. The government would be well-advised to get it's act together because so far it is only a laughing-stock and it is making Thailand a laughing stock. They are way too obsessed with trying to say some things which sound good (which they doubtless copied from someone else without understanding what it means or would require) in order to win acceptance on the basis of proving their effectiveness.

In my opinion, Thailand lacks the education, skills and expertise to do any of the above. if they do have any of these, then they've done a remarkable job of keeping them hidden.

Thailand 4.0 is dead in the water. It looks good on paper, provided one does not think about what would be involved to accomplish it. To succeed, Thailand would need a working educational system. Thailand would need people with vision to drive it and real leadership, Thailand is sadly lacking on all counts.

Expecting farmers to embrace this and become entrepenuers is rediculous, especially in the short term. In the long term, a reformed educational system is needed first.

I assume this is only for local consumption, to make the sheeple think that the government is actually doing something.

The current bunch sounds more like Thailand 1940 to me. wink.png

I was thinking of a number between 1983 and 1985, but I'm afraid if I get more specific the post will be deleted.

"...his government is working to end corruption to allow for the transparency and good governance..."

I don't know where to begin. Does he listen to the words that come out of his mouth? Does he believe them, or think that anyone else does?

Thanks for the link, I had thought it might be the target %score at o-net for the education ministry, or the number of English word in the average Thai's vocabulary, or perhaps the IQ required to become PM.

The writer is not too good at similes

Lots wrong with this sentence, but most people find digital maps more convenient than concrete ones these days.

"climb out of the dark hole using a concrete and comprehensive road map to turn the country's traditional economy into a "value-added economy" through innovation and out-of-the-box thinking."

As far as "out of the box thinking", I don't think many here know the box even has an outside as they have never experienced it.

Thailand 4.0 is certainly achievable, but only if foreigners are allowed to manage this project and 'the boss' gives Power of Attorney for these foreigners to implement Article 44 to get the job done.

Otherwise, it is dead in the water coffee1.gif

Was never impressed with Thailand's software abilities.

Ditto. I recall arriving in 2004 and being shocked that banking systems were still running DOS software. I thought it was quaint at the time, evidence of an honest society.

Got that wrong...

If it is true they must have made real progress. Remember when they blocked YouTube when they really wanted to block one post on it? with such skills readily available it will be a great success

Prayut wants to elevate the country to Thailand 4.0 when he can't get the country to Democracy 1.0

I guess he has to try what he's capable of achieveing first before trying the impossible.

No no, they are actually starrting to do a good job but it wasn't explained properly...

The BKKPost had a story about the single gateway coming back. This goes against a tech future. I can't find the story on TV. I'd like to see what people think of that and the renewed interest in it by the junta.

My understanding is the Single Gateway has been a "go" since it was approved by the Cabinet. The government is trying to keep it low key.

The PM sounds as if he's spouting nonsense, but his underlying message that Thailand needs to increase efficiency and innovation is accurate, just hopelessly optimistic. Manufacturing jobs have been lost to places like Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia precisely because the Thai workforce is inefficient and retrogressive. The solution is to fix the old-fashioned fundamentals such as education. This PM reminds me of Yingluck when she promised tablet computers to kids. It sounded progressive and appealing but the money would have been better spent on teachers to raise standards and lower class sizes.

First two are confusing, but both feature "innovation". Sorry, innovation no have.

Number 3...sorry. Fluency in another language would be required there, wouldn't it?

It would take a western style freedom of thinking to make this happen. For starters the education system is based on rote learning, being part of a group, and repeat what the teacher says. Then the government do not want people thinking for themselves; that is dangerous in the mind of the government. So its a non starter?
