Phuket town or Patong, where rooms are cheaper?

In Phuket town I can rent a room for 4500 baht / month. I want to move to Patong, though. Are the rooms in Patong cheaper for montly renting?

Yes, small rooms with ensuite bathrooms are available in Patong from 4,000 to 5,000 per month. Electric and water typically charged a flat rate of 1-200 baht. No A/C and mostly rented by local Thais.

These are usually in 2-3 story unmarked apartment buildings on some of the unnamed sois that run off of Nanai road. Take a ride down Nanai and look for signs saying "room for rent" with a phone number. Usually, the signs are in Thai, though and I don't know how many of the landlords speak any English.

Some of the newer guesthouses in the SaiKor and Nanai areas are getting desperate and you may be able to find hotel-type rooms in the 7,000 range. 9,000 is fairly common, and being advertised right now.

I did a quick check yesterday on booking.com. You can rent a double room with air-con in a modern hotel for 200 baht per night!

Yeah for you it is more suitable to be in Patong more chances of swinging there and nothing for you in Phuket Town.
