Has anyone done it?

I'm after some shiny new alloys, so I called a few thai shops and got quoted 3000gbp (150k) for some BBS alloys.

They can bought in the UK for around half of that including insurance/delivery to Suvarnaphumi.

Looking at one of these duty calculators, it says the duty rate is 10% for wheels.

So I make it 1500 * 10% * 7% = 1765gbp

Am I missing something?

Never mind what the duty calculators say, once your wheels have been stamped through Thai customs, they will in all probability be at least as expensive as ones sourced here.

well, you might be right, though I recall reading in another thread that one poster imports tyres from the US as its cheaper.

I'll wait for more opinions/views

To be honest it depends on who you use to bring them to Thailand.

Pick the wrong one and you can pay as much again as you paid in UK.

You won't decide on the duty or storage for a few days while they wait for your payment etc, or they may deliver them direct with their duty already paid, again decided by someone else not you.

To be honest it would be better to search around a few places and you might be lucky and get them here cheaper in the long run.

My experience too, privately importing anything into Thailand can land you with a large duty fee, even for stuff you've previously purchased and already own. It's a racket.

But many Thai companies have alloy wheels...

Are you sure here need your alloy wheels?

I think the OP is only talking about one set for himself.

Not an import business.

Be prepared to pay 10-40% Customs fee and 7% tax. The customs fee is depending on what day it and the position of the moon and planetsblink.png . Can never look on a tariff and expect to pay that.

I wonder if the BBS alloys are imports- 150k seems a lot !

I know BBS at one time were the bees' knees in alloys, and maybe you have set your heart on one style .

But the choice in alloys here is vast - Lenso are good and surely must be cheaper.

The import situation is a nightmare, it's absolutely no good looking at a list that says one particular % duty.

If the customs officer is having a bad hair day or just argued with his girlfriend - you could pay a fortune.

I always thought that locally produced alloys were reasonably priced. Am I wrong?

They are and quite a bit cheaper than what one would pay if they lived int eh UK, for example. I've seen some companies selling genuine imported wheels for 10K each or more. Lenso are made here and sell world-wide. I've had a set on my honda for 10 years and still pretty good condition given their age.

I find the selection of rims available locally to be very ordinary.

Been thinking of importing some Borbets and the outcome of this thread interests me a lot.

I never had an issue bringing in wheels. The only issue might be that they are considered automotive parts hence catch 30 % import duties. I just ordered bbs and they are 3200 euro a set In germany so I'd sign up for the 150k deal. have an eye for transport cost also.good luck

3200 Euro is around 127k Baht, are you stating you paid import fees of 23k Baht to obtain the 150k Baht total ?

Are you bringing these items in by air or sea freight ?

I assume you are using a shipping agent here ?

So you have imported wheels into Thailand? what import tax did you pay?

3200euros including tyres?

I've just been doing some initial research, for example;

https://www.performancealloys.com/MyBasket.aspx

A set of 4x19 inch BBS wheels

*without tyres*

post-62077-0-42280900-1464898324_thumb.p

with airfreight delivery to suvarnaphumi costs:

post-62077-0-48433200-1464898396_thumb.p

1330GBP = 68332THB

BBS Thailand has the same 4 wheels (without tyres) for 150000thb

This then made me try to find out the import rate - that seems to be the sticking point - From the comments here, it sounds like they can apply whatever rate they choose - so I wanted advice from people who have actually done what I'm thinking of, and can confirm that this is the case.

I will also now look at some more local brands - Lenso I have heard of, others, I'm wary of the quality (?) If its a chinese knock off brand I'm not really interested

I've contacted a thai guy today who's family business deals in car accessories - hopefully he can give me some advice/help.

I will also email the website, and see if they can get an estimate of total price with delivery to Thailand from their courier.

I was given a quote for wheels in the UK. The 4 x alloys was 1720 GBP and the Air Freight was 212 GBP.

For the Thai shipping agent the total cost required was around 50.000 Baht. For car alloys the import tax + the VAT alone is 37%

I would recon you need a shipping agent in the country of purchase who have a office or partner in Bangkok, and they bring in the items under there import license. If you have them sent to Thailand under your own address then they will be held at the customs house and then the fun starts.

What is the weight of one wheel ? Any chance to bring back as checked luggage of 2 people, over a couple of trips ? Will be over the 20,000 bht limit per person but if you decide to declare on the ted channel I guess you'll settle the duties there and then.
