BANGKOK: -- Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand showed up in full force to welcome State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi at Thalay Thai market in Samut Sakhon province.

Fulfilling her promise made in her last visit to this hub of Myanmar migrant workers several years ago, Suu Kyi went straight to Samut Sakhon to visit her countrymen working as labour in Thailand immediately after her arrival in Thailand for a three-day official visit.

Thousands of her supporters – many of them travelled from several provinces, appeared to be in joyful mood as they gathered and waited hours in advance of Suu Kyi’s arrival at the Thalay Thai market.

Most of them were seen wearing T-shirts wearing her picture. Children were dressed up in traditional and ethnic costumes. As she showed up, several of them shouted wishing her well. But some appeared angry after they were blocked by Thai officials from meeting with her.

Only 500 Myanmar migrants handpicked by authorities were allowed to meet with Ms Suu Kyi.

About 900 policemen, military personnel and local officials were deployed to ensure safety, peace and order at the market.
