"Sideline Girl" repents - tells others not to sell themselves online

s5a.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A "Sideline Girl" has said that she has given up the life of selling herself online. And she advises other young women not to enter the world of offering sex for money online.

"Sideline" is a Thai euphemism for young women who often have jobs or are at university who offer themselves to men online for money to make ends meet, reported Daily News.

An organization that monitors such behavior has said that girls doing this have increased by 30 - 40% as poor economic conditions make it harder for women to earn enough for themselves and their families to live on.

The girl who revealed her background as a "Sideline Girl" posted her experiences on "pantip.com" under the heading "Sideline Girl Repents".

She said that she was introduced to this world by a friend after she needed money to pay back a debt. But she got hooked on the business after repaying the debt and did it throughout the time she was at university. It was easy work with lots of money, she said.

"Money was God!" she said and she worked selling herself for six years. But her life changed when one of her customers became her boyfriend and now she has a regular office job and feels better about herself.

She warned: "People will say that you will have it all in this business. But there are things that you won't have - you will not have a feeling of self worth, you will not have love and you will have no future.

"Sideline work will lead to your ruin", she added.

Many online posters thought it was brave of the girl to come out and good that she was warning others.

Nathee Sorawaree the secretary of an organization that monitors such behavior in Thai society said that there has been an increase of 30-40% of girls in the last few years in higher education and low to mid range paying jobs who are offering extras online.

And they are getting younger as Thai society becomes more open. He said that girls fall into two main groups - those looking to support families with extra income and those wanting extra money to pay for technology items that they could not afford with their regular salaries.

What a crock! This girl claims she repents yet and says women doing this can not find love yet, at the same time, claims her customer has become her boyfriend? It would seem that anyone who actually read her story would be encouraged instead of discouraged into finding a man with money and a possible future with one of her customers.

Well said, in fact mentioning the new bf and a good life kills any good her 'repent' comments might have had and actually encouraged girls to enter this trade.

Seems more like an advert highlighting on one side money to be made and on the the other girls are getting younger.

Not sure about the comment Thai society is opening up after the latest soapy massage raids.

It's easy for her to be sanctimonious now after living off the game for six years paying for her university and good life.

Now she misses the attention so this is her quest for a little celebrity in her life. Boyfriend and office girl is short on thrills.

Just my opinion.

"wanting extra money to pay for technology items that they could not afford with their regular salaries"

And don't worry if you're a young university girl hanging out with some older dude and suddenly have an iPhone. Your mates will never question how you got the the phone. They might just ask if your older gentleman friend has any friends who are single.

In reality, no matter who says what, prostitutions in it's many forms will continue to flourish for generations

to come, it is the oldest profession in the world documented in the bible, so any comments and bantering

will only lived for a short while, and men will do what men always do, endless search for a sexual gratification.....

These girls are simply following the party line and spreading happiness.

I hope there will be a happy ending to her dilemma.

Indeed what a crock. She did all right with it didn,t she ! The difficult part is for her partner, who will at some point in time realize he is shacked up with a hooker :(

Short cut economics and the need to have shiny things is deeply ingrained via media, adverts, etc. They all drive this desire for more. Even people with money can't be happy unless they shop. Meanwhile education takes a back seat, kids abandon rural life and look for quick solutions for their apparent needs. Girls and boys, take the shortest road to meeting those needs. Sex sells, no doubt, but the problem is not remedied simply by saying no. The desire to drink Starbucks with an iPhone is hand is a huge need, bigger than most can shed. Sadly this dilemma is not going away, anytime soon.

Did you actually read the story?

When you boil it down it's just a transaction between two consenting adults both getting what they want.

I bet there is plenty that have gone on to graduate and live happy lives and leave their past behind them.

Umm, considering that the article says the boyfriend is a former customer,

i'd say theres a good chance he already knows!

No, Apart from the health risks and physical risk of meeting a nutter not to mention the psychological damage it can do. Most bar workers have to get drunk or take drugs to get through the night with disgusting men that they hate.

reminds me of the story of the little boy who approached a sexily clad woman on a street corner who asks: "are youa prostitute?" "No," she answered, "I am a substitute. I only work on weekends."

"Prostitute marries customer", would probably appear perfectly normal behaviour to the expats I've met in Thailand.

Well if it wasn't viewed as something morally wrong, if it was properly regulated with the girls and boys having access to health care and security then this wouldn't happen. It only happens because we are backward and think prostitution can be banned. All prohibition does is open the doors to crime and abuse for the women and boys involved.

Also, most 'bar girls' are doing it out of economic situations, if they had access to better paid jobs etc. then that would solve that issue. And if they want to do the job, shock horror, some do, then it should be safe and on their terms.

I get your point, but many will probably ask why you consider the issue a problem.

It's been going on for years, so much so in Thailand that its now the norm.

Btw, If it is illegal and "doesnt exist" ( as some believe) it would make you wonder why they have a panel of experts looking into it.

Anyway, AFAICS, no harm has been done here. Seems all the characters in the story didnt hurt anyone in the process.

girl: now happy, bf, good life, has the goods- no problem

Bf: has sexy lady- no problem

girls family: probably also did ok- no problem

As others have stated, the article sounds more like an endorsement than a warning.

Maybe the high horse riders are the only ones with the problem?

From the post I understand that she found her life partner because of the "Sideline" work and now she feels better about herself... why repent? or maybe she forgot to write about the "bad" things in that business ...

It just highlights the Thai addiction to money

To me the article looks as a disguised way to actually promote prostitution

And the locals too. Happens everywhere. I see how meeting a partner who can offer you financial stability would be appealing. But I'd still wanna go out and work. Do my own thing and be my own person.

Asian and Western values of relationships and marriage can be very different. In Asia the onus can be on marrying a man who has money and wants family. Someone your parents approve of. In western culture we have more of an onus on 'love'. Quite often when we meet a person we can be madly in love, but soon after, we can get bored because the sex gets boring or familiarity breeds contempt.

Marriage is a like a business deal. You've both gotta be able to add things to it. Whether it be a big set of titties, decent conversation or simply just being easy going. You've both gotta add to it or it won't work.
