Home Pro, Big C, Lotus, any latex store around town. You can probably also get one on Lazada's website.

Do yourself a favor and get a big yoga ball and stretch out on it every day. Worked wonders for me.

Another approach is to fix your body with stretching, exercise, maybe yoga.

Yoga classes now in progress. Thank you, again, Imelda

My problem is just the opposite.... if the mattress is too soft I usually wake up with pain lasting weeks. A wooden board under the mattress is the best remedy smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png

I agree I have DDD and soft = pain

good luck

Imelda, do you sleep on your side?  If you do, you might try sleeping with a pillow between your legs. (Doctor recommended).

I can really emphasis with you except I'm more like the other posters here who recommended the firm mattress, which is normally better for back aches.

Good luck on resolving the problem.

Enjoy,

Hello Ag, I've tried sleeping with a pillow in the small of my back.  I'll give your suggestion a whirl, too, as I tend to turn onto my side.  Thank you so much for your help.  Imelda

^^ Nah. My back pain is caused by hard mattress. Never could sleep on the floor. With a topper, NO PROBLEM.

Every department store probably sells them. I bought a 3" one and that works for me. I take it in the car if going to be staying at a Thai hotel.

Have you tried checking the mattress underside? Sometimes hard one side, soft the other.

Hello there,

This hasn't been mentioned until now (turning the mattress). I've just moved and this bed is even worse than the last, so I'm going to take your advice and turn the mattress now, in the hope of a decent night's sleep.

I'll pass on the opiates........

Thank you for the "turning" tip, though smile.png

No need to turn it to check. If it is hard it will feel hard to touch.

Hello there,

I did check, the mattress is hard on the under-side, too.  I plan to buy another, more expensive topper this week, in the hope that I can resolve the issue once and for all.

Thank you so much for your help, thaibeachlovers.

I have started researching this subject as I will be buying a new house in a couple of weeks and will need to buy a new bed. I do not suffer constant back pain, but rather stabbing back pain which comes and goes but has got worse over the past couple of years. Sometimes, when getting up from a seat or walking up a slope, etc. I just have to stop. Its like someone has stabbed a knife in my back. Already done physio, etc. but I believe it boils down to too much sitting at work and unsuitable mattresses.

I too believed that a hard/firm mattress was recommended for people with back troubles, however, all my research shows that the medical position on this has changed and now consensus is that medium/firm mattresses tend to be the best (see spine-health and webmd, to name a couple of sites). The mattress needs to be firm enough to properly support your body while soft enough to mold to your shape so that your spine is in a natural position and no pressure placed on it, i.e. your bum and shoulders sink a bit but your back in between those points does not. This is for back and side position sleepers. On my current mattress my bun and shoulders barely make a dent in the mattress even when sleeping on my side.

I am still looking. But in the meantime will continue doing the exercises my doctor suggested.

In UK what works for me is a firm mattress with a 4 inch memory foam topper, very comfortable.

A few weeks ago my back was aching in the morning after sleeping, i thought i needed a new topper but after some research it was the spring mattress not supporting properly anymore. So i bought a new firm mattress and used existing memory foam topper and all is good again.

In Thailand, if the mattress is firm enough I'll get a good topper as above.

I suffered back problems for quite some time now and have tried all kinds of mattresses but still had problems.

At the start of this year I bought an air mattress from Lazada and I haven't had a problem sleeping since.

Not saying that this is the way for everyone but it worked for me.

Actually most sites dedicated to back pain rate air mattresses as the best, followed by memory foam.

I would be worried about punctures.

I don't really have a problem sleeping, but I believe the hard mattress I am using has exacerbated my problem. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Since we have a lot of back pain specialists on TV, I wasn't going to respond, but responding may help someone. The mattress we had was hard and my back was hurting every morning. It continued to get worse and worse. It is pure BS that a hard mattress is the best for a bad back. I researched mattresses on the Internet and ordered a pure latex mattress from Pattani industries here in Thailand. The very first night I could feel the tension draining. The mattress cost 28,000 baht and that was the best investment I ever made. My mattress is 7 inches thick, thus the high cost. As suggested, a 3 inch latex topper should help a lot. Latex is much more expensive than the various foams but it will not flatten out. It should last many years without developing sunken spots. The topper can be rolled up and taken wherever needed.

Pity, you could have saved 4,000 THB and received a 100% natural latex mattress from Mam.  But glad its helping your back none the less.  It really is a great material to sleep on.  I sleep in my side so was prone to my arm going numb on a regular mattress, does not happen with latex.

Had I known, I would have been happy to buy from Mam. Since I also got two latex pillows, I probably wouldn't have saved that much.
