Changing employer

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have currently a valid (expires 05/2017) visa and work permit from my employer. I've decided to work for another employer who can provide me with all proper documents for a new work permit and if necessary for the visa.

Does anyone have experience with this? According to information that I have now. I have to cancel my work permit at the employment office, then have my visa canceled at immigration, then I have 7 days (on a tourist visa) to leave the country and go to a Thai embassy get the right documents for workpermit and visa and then get the new work permit at the employment office.

Is there a shortcut possible?

Most sincerely,

Peter De Rouck

If you have a valid visa from an embassy or consulate it would remain valid. It seems that you have a year extension of stay based upon working which does end when your job ends.

There is no free 7 days to leave unless you go your extension at the one stop center for BOI companies. You would have to apply for a 7 day extension and pay 1900 to get 7 days to leave the country.

It is possible to change employers if you new employer can apply for your work permit and get a application approval letter. Then with a letter from your current stating the date your job ends needed to cancel your current extension you could apply for a new extension with the approval letter and supporting document from you new employer.

We are thinking of a different route. Is it possible to have 2 work permits? Before I cancel the old permit, I get a new one with documents from my new employer. Since my current visa is tied to my first employer, I should notify immigration that I have a new employer. I could proof this with my new work permit and documents of my new employer. If they accept that, I could cancel the old work permit.

I have a year visa that I got from immigration in Chiang Mai after providing documents from my old employer.

Dear Ubonjoe, I reread your your post and I think you kind of wanted to tell me the same thing that I was explaining in my previous mail. Is that correct?

You will not have a new work permit when you apply for the new extension. You will only have a work permit application approval letter. After the old extension is canceled and the new one is issued your existing work permit would need to be canceled and your new one issued.

You do not have a visa you have a one year extension of stay you applied for at immigration using documents your employer supplied.

OK, I think I've got it. Are these the correct steps of action?

1 Go to immigration and ask for a new visa and have the extension of the old employer canceled. With me I take the documents provided by my new employer.

2 I go to the employment office, ask to cancel the old work permit and ask for a new work permit submitting the papers provided by new employer

Dear Ubonjoe, thank you so much for taking the time to read my posts.

1. You cannot get a visa at immigration.

Your new employer will need to apply for your new work permit and get the letter I mentioned earlier. After you have that you will go to immigration with the letter from you current employer to cancel your extension. On the same day you would apply for a new one year extension by showing the letter from the work permit office and other required document from you new employer.

2. You would go to the work permit office to cancel your current work permit and have the already applied for work permit issued.

I've been saying OK a few times already but now I really think I got it right. Thanks again, I hope it will all work out smoothly. I'll let you know how it went down.

most sincerely,
