BANGKOK: -- The army will meet on Wednesday to discuss how it can help irrigation officials to get rid of water hyacinth which has clogged the Chao Phraya river for more than three kilometres long in front of the Chao Phraya dam.

The water-borne weeds were estimated to weigh about 50,000 tonnes and Chainat-based irrigation officials have been trying to remove the water hyacinth from the river.

Mr Phurongkorn Somton, director of the 12th irrigation provincial office said that, each year, his officials had to carry out eight attempts to remove the plants from the river and this will be the seventh time of this year.

He disclosed that, at the start of the rainy season, the hyacinth stretched as long as about eight kilometres but it has now shrunk to about three kilometres long after the bulk of them were eradicated.

But he assured that the plants did not pose a problem to the opening or closing of the sluice gates.

Water hyacinth multiplies very quickly. Within one month, one plant will increase to 1,000 plants. It is also very tough – even if the plants die, their seeds will survive for up to 15 years.

This plant is a huge problem, are there really no solutions to eradicate it?

A hippo would eat them all day long, maybe the Thai can breed tame hippo's just like they did with the tigers?

It's useless to fight this plant, it will be back within 2 months.

I once saw a furniture shop on Charoen Krung road selling furniture made from water hyacinth.  Looked similar to rattan furniture.  I thought that was a great idea- one resource which, being a noxious weed, if you do over-exploit it, you still win!
