Block obnoxious forum avatars

Featured Replies

Makes for a pleasanter reading experience. In Firefox you can use Image Blocker:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/image-blocker-jetpack/

In case you didn't know. I've got rid of Chicog's and a few others, figured I'm not the only one who's tired of them. Of course you can block any images, like the Kardashians--one at at time w/ this extension.

No doubt Chrome etc have similar extensions that our Chrome users can point us to. Enjoy!

Can you change people's avatars, so you see them the way you imagine they are. The back end of a donkey would suffice for a few posters here.

No worries, your avatars are always aesthetically pleasing.

Ages ago you could block avatars in the forums' settings panels. This was handy as there were some horrible animated avatars.

It looks like that option was disabled/removed?

You can add people to your ignore list so you don't have to see their avatars/posts. Just be careful you don;t add a Moderator, or ignore their messages as this can result in a ban. Also make sure someone you "ignored" previously hasn't subsequently become a Moderator.

Can be done with a greasemonkey script but such effort represents more of response than the poster really deserves. A blank nothingness is just so appropriate. I only mentioned one name because thereby the poster will learn his avatar successful in its purpose, think he's just a little more important, and attempt to pile on more if possible.

At a glance I don't see that option but even if it's there, simply right-clicking on the obnoxious avatar and selecting Block Image is the fastest and most convenient way of getting rid of it. :)

Generally I want continue to see the avatar-troll posts themselves as, by the immaturity already shown, it's more likely than usual that they'll provide an ongoing stream of laughs and shreddings.

I'm sorry my avatar causes you such angst.

Naturally, now I'm going to keep it forever.

Let's not elevate and exaggerate its importance and therefore your own. 'Twas inevitable, eh. But you're just one in a list.

And you're not fooling anyone. You're so attached to that avatar that you'd never, ever give it up. Good for those members who like it. But hey--what do i care? That blank space is quite fine.

Ah don't worry, you did that when you gave me a special mention.

No way you could step it up a notch by animating it, is there?

Well, blanks of course need to feel important too if only by negative mention. :wai: Understood. Preen and strut as you wish over your new blank; good thing I didn't mention others to join w/ you! But just as an example, members can see the positive (or negative, fans!) effects of avatar blocking here and incidentally decide whether they wish to similarly block or alternatively celebrate the pristine innocence of non-blocking:

chicog.jpg

I'm not making a recommendation one way or the other (sorry!), and you shouldn't confuse me with someone who cares, just as a public service bringing the mere possibility to the attn of the members so that they may decide for themselves in whatever case they wish. Many of us do spend a good deal of time on the forum and surely anything that makes it a little pleasanter is all to the good, given much of the content we have to put up with anyway.

I'll be blanking more as I go through various threads--but definitely w/o mentioning it. This will give many more members opportunity to dream they've also achieved the coveted blank status without knowing for sure as you do. :)

Someones superiority complex has reached unseen levels. Must be because his silly signature is invisible now.

Why not remove my avatar?

Inflammatory post and reply removed.   Please stay on topic.

I agree with you, some peoples avatars are very annoying when you are trying to read something and a silly cartoon is distracting you, from another poster, in chrome you block these gimmicks in ABP but this does'nt seem to work in firefox quantum, i have tried differant setting to non avail, would you have any solution to block these annoyances in firefox quantum, as none of the suggestions here are compattable with this version of FF, sorry for dragging up an old thread, but you seem a bit more knowledgable on this subject.

YES! uBlock Origin will do it. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

After installation, "block element" is available from the right-click context menu. So you select the obnoxious cutesy avatar :bah: and then Create in the uBlock modal popup. Done! :clap2:

I used it to block hyku1147's just the other day.

Another cool thing about uBlock Origin. Go into the Dashboard and select Advanced Options. Thereafter you'll see an enhanced menu when you right-click on the icon in the FF icon bar. One of those is third-party scripts. You may find that quite useful. 'Nuff said lest I get into trouble here. BTW, when you subscribe to lists, you might periodically clear their caches and manually update them.

Thanks tried as you suggested, but my copy of uBlock original does'nt seem to have advanced options so cannot do as you suggest ie. click on FF bar all i get when i right click on someones crappy avatar to block it, is the screen dims and a no entry symbol appears, but the avatar remains, as you might have gathered i am not very PC orientated, but thanks for your input, i was hoping it would work as simply as ABP in chrome! Thanks again, anyhow.

1. For the advanced options, click on the ublock icon and select Dashboard. Then under Settings, select "I am an advanced user." Thereafter you should get an expanded menu when you click the icon. Disabling third-party scripts may have various side effects, so just renable them as needed.

2. Might be easier for you to use the element picker. Click on the ublock icon and choose the eyedropper. Then click on the avatar. The Create dialog will then appear in a faded modal at the bottom right of your window and grow opaque as you move your cursor to it. Like this: https://goo.gl/YD55uq. I'll leave that link active a day or two. It's really quite simple once you know how.

Lemme know how that goes.

OK finally got it using the "eye dropper" method simple really, i was on the verge of abandoning FF and reverting back to chrome, just to be rid of this menace, can't quite see what some posters get from some these more ridiculous avatars, it conveys to me a silly minded poster more than anything else, thanks again for your help.

PS I too used to frequent "The Blues Bar" now living in Sattahip, and don't frequent that neck of the woods these days, even if it's still there that is! Take care and thanks! Max

Great, glad that worked for ya. Anything we can do to make the forum a bit pleasanter is all to the good. Cut down on the visual trolling too! I just blocked another one.

BTW, how did you happen to find this old thread?

I just googled "get rid of annoying avatars" and among the answers that came up was your old thread!

Strangely enough after having a moan on facebook about ABP not working the same in FF Quantum ie. simply getting rid of these PITA avatars by clicking on them, as it worked so easily in Chrome, ABP sent me message yesterday "out of the blue" saying they were aware of the problem and would be providing a fix next week, i answered, too late, i had dropped ABP in favour of "uBlock original" as per your suggestion, can't remember how this subject came up in facebook, but a couple of others had joined in the moan with me, which just goes to show the powers that be do read these threads!

Ha! There's a reason ABP has been so popular for so long! Probably feeling the heat from uBlock Origin now. But it's great they're adding this ability and are supporting Quantum so that our members may avail themselves of it. Definitely a bit user-friendlier than uBO. Glad you reported it.
