Registration of SIM cards - what happened?

Featured Replies

Yep, the return reply confirms the phone is indeed in DTAC's network.

Well your SIM is obviously registered. You could check in with DTAC via 1678, email, LINE, a shop if you want to see who your SIM is registered to.

Or you could ask your friend.

Most retail SIM outlets used the NBTC 2-Shot app., or simply recorded the SIM and ID details. In theory the SIM cannot be activated without that being ticked in the record.

I bought an AIS SIM a few dys ago from an AIS kiosk in the SIAM BTS station; the rep. asked for my passport details, I had a copy with me which was acceptable. She had to enter the details via a PC keyboard into her system, along with the SIM details.

OK, so please tell me what happened after July 31st 2015.

In a word - nothing. if I remember right the deadline was extended into the Autumn, could have been Oct 1st. What also caused a bit of confusion was that in December the 2G service was terminated so some that had registered may have had the sim disconnected because they didn't upgrade to 3G.

It looks like the push to monitor the movement of foreigners has not abated. I've been using DTAC on a monthly plan direct from my bank account for three years now.

Today, the message came up "No SIM card installed" and I headed down to the Apple Shop in Bang Khae expecting it to be a phone problem. No, Apple says, our SIM cards work fine in your phone. Went up to DTAC and they told me they had suspended my number because there was no contact name and number on the SIM card. They issued me with a new SIM and the phone is working again.

Smells like the government going ahead with their 1984 surveillance plan of foreigners with no laws or statutes to back it.

This is not the same thing as GPS tracking SIM.

Are you pre-paid, or post-paid? If post-paid, it seems odd that there is no name, ID (Thai or foreign), address, email, etc associated with your account.

Maybe they are doing some sort of audit, and found details missing?

Did they explain the need for a new SIM? Did they ask you for a "contact name" and "number"?

There are newer SIM technologies which may be required for new, advanced services (like LTE CA, VoLTE, VoWiFi).

Finally there is a phenomenon called SIM Exhaustion which requires a replacement.

But you should be paranoid as they are tracking you. :whistling:
